Boy And The Ghost Lyrics
The streets are empty.
Inside it's warm.
His hands are shaking.
They locked the door.
A voice is calling,
asking to get in.
All he wanted was a toy.
All he needed was a gentle heart
to lead him through the dark
when his dreams are running wild.
Boy and the ghost,
fire's not burning.
The lights went out,
the lights went out.
Big family dinner, the untold pain.
Their eyes are sparkling
on his frozen face.
Angel's calling,
asking to get in.
All he wanted was a toy.
All he needed was a gentle heart
to lead him through the dark
when there's nowhere left to fall.
Boy and the ghost.
His eyes are burning.
The lights went out.
The dream is on.
Wake up, wake up:
there's an angel in the snow.
Look up, look:
it's a frightened dead boy,
with so much hate,
such bad dreams.
He could have seen.
The toy's the key,
but no one saw,
no one saw.
no one saw.
All he wanted was a toy;
all he needed was a beating heart
to lead him through the dark.
Boy and the ghost.
Despero, solitas, debilis, desolo.
Despero, solitas, debilis, desolo.
When there's nowhere left to fall,
nowhere to hide.
The silence is hurting.
Inside it's cold.
Sleep or die.
Nowhere to go,
nowhere to hide.
His light went out.
Inside it's warm.
His hands are shaking.
They locked the door.
A voice is calling,
asking to get in.
All he needed was a gentle heart

I agree with Satakieli. I think its more about a young beggar, orphan, or a boy whose been neglected by his parents or caretaker. The whole song sounds like he's knocking on doors to get some shelter and food during the Christmas holidays (explaining the toy) and everyone's ignoring him and not letting him in. It sounds like he died already and tarja is just singing about how this poor boy died.
The streets are empty. Inside it's warm. His hands are shaking. They locked the door. A voice is calling, asking to get in.
-He's roaming the streets in search of a place to take him in. He finds a house and the people inside just ignore him and lock the door so he can't get in.
All he wanted was a toy. All he needed was a gentle heart to lead him through the dark when his dreams are running wild.
-All he wants is a toy and a kind person to take him in. He just wants some place warm to stay.
Big family dinner, the untold pain. Their eyes are sparkling on his frozen face. Angel's calling, asking to get in.
-He stumbles upon a house where they are having Christmas dinner and enjoying themselves and he's outside freezing and sad because he wishes it were him. (The people's gleeful eyes sparkling on his frozen face) He's asking to come in and still no one listens. (Also explaining the no one saw part)
When there's nowhere left to fall, nowhere to hide. The silence is hurting. Inside it's cold.
Sleep or die. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. His light went out.
-This is how he died on the inside and outside. He was left out in the cold and froze and/or starved to death. Maybe he also came from an abusive home and so he has no home to go to and no one outside to let him or care. This is just my opinions. I agree the song is incredibly sad with so much meaning. I cried. :{
I believe this song has to deal with a boy who was abuse by his parent. He lived his life abuse and only found a friend by the ghost. The parent then murder the boy. And his suffering ends, as he joined the ghost in a ghosty human way.
i'm getting a sexual abuse vibe, the whole songs really metaphorical in all honesty i think the boy committed suicide but thats just a guess. i'm not really sure, but its one of my favourites
This is one of my favourite songs from her album. I also think it is about sexual abuse and having no one to turn to for help...and I agree with xodiex, I think the boy committed suicide so he could join the only friend he had (the ghost).
I don't see it as sexual abuse so much as neglect. It seems that the boy was turned out onto the streets by his family.
The Dead Boy is probably another child who went through the same thing and died alone, scared, and angry. He realizes that the boy doesn't have the same anger, but that even the smallest sign of someone caring, a toy for instance, would probably save the child's life.
Unfortunately, no one else noticed, or cared to notice. The child, believing he had no where to go and that he was unloved, froze to death on the streets.
Just the interpretation I get. In some ways, I think it's even sadder than abuse.
Could it be Tuomas?
Q: Could it be Tuomas? A: No, First - Tuomas tells us many times that his childhood was a good one. Second - Tuomas doesn't write songs for Tarja since she has left Nightwish

I'm just like to know what "Despero, solitas, debilis, desolo" means. BTW: Why does every time I look up a song that is kind-of-heavy-loaded-lyrics I hear people talk about abuse. If you have a problem yourself just talk to a psychotherapist.

Despero, solitas, debilis, desolo. Have no hope , lonliness , to weaken , to leave desolate.
Actually i think that this song is dedicated to her hoseband past life...:)..Tuomas is not for sure :)
I agree with the people who say he was abandoned. I don't think it's about Tuomas. I mean, I thought it was strange that she had the Dead Boy in MWS. Anyone who knows Nightwish/Tarja knows what the Dead Boy means. But it wouldn't make any sense to me if it were about Tuomas. Even in a metaphorical sense.
The song makes me think that he was abducted. You know where they say all he wanted was a toy, that is how some children are abducted. Also, Big family dinner, the untold pain. Their eyes are sparkling on his frozen face. makes me think that the 'frozen face' could be talking about a picture of him, and that his family is eating dinner and thinking of him which is causing the untold pain. Does anybody else think this or think that this makes sense?
