Seven Digit Pin Code Lyrics
They found my body near the river
Now all the people in our town, they think it was your father
I didn't get your consent, but that's how I make my rent
The void; it's hard to make a friend
When it's too hard to put down the lense
And so, I float
Drifted 'bout 50 miles past Jamestown
I was recovered in the more where I floated onto shore
While the James was good for me,
And the barbed wire, that's another story
It's hard to rest in peace
When you can't get no sympathy
And so...
I can't seem to keep my mind off that inght
The way that you left with all your friends
Beneath the bar lights.
I couldn't help but hate you
So I followed you, I followed you home
And oh, take off your clothes, stand by the window
So I can see the scar that sits below your naval
And oh, with the Rosary, I wish that was me
How I wish I could rest upon your chest forever
I float, I float, I float.
I wish that I believed in heaven
I can't thank Sunday School for that.
Send me a seven digit pin code
Let me repent, let me believe.
We learn what we can comprehend
The folding of our hands, the bending of our knees
And the Hial Mary's along the bedside
My innocence must have caught his eye
Enough to ruin the last 16 years of my life
It's so hard to repent
When you've been giving no such reason to believe
I took off my clothes, stood by the window
Well don't you see the same scar sits below my naval?
And oh, but it's there for life,
Better yet, the lack thereof
How I wish I could come back as a piece of jewelry.
And oh, I float
I float, I float.
Now all the people in our town, they think it was your father
I didn't get your consent, but that's how I make my rent
The void; it's hard to make a friend

instead of 'void' i think he sings 'voyeur,' which kinda fits cause he seems to be talking about looking through someone's window. anyway, ever since i first heard this song, i didnt know what it was about but now i think its about religion. and maybe doubting religion a bit.
I also think it's voyeur.
"Written on an acoustic tour Sam and I did 4 years ago (We are getting old), I had heard a story about a kid in Pennsylvania who was taking hidden pictures of a girl and putting them on the internet and later he was found dead in the river, her father a suspect. I never followed up on the whole thing, who knows if this song will ever become something more."
I think that it about that guy, and he was all messed up inside because of being molested in sunday school. They suspect her father, but what actually happened was he committed suicide. He loved that girl, but he might have had some serious intimacy issue, hence the stalking and picture taking.
Well the booklet says "Written on an acoustic tour Sam and I did 4 years ago (We are getting old), I had heard a story about a kid in Pennsylvania who was taking hidden pictures of a girl and putting them on the internet and later he was found dead in the river, her father a suspect. I never followed up on the whole thing, who knows if this song will ever become something more."
I'd say it's definitely doubting religion. Nate writes about that a bunch, but I think this song is where he states it most clearly.
Also, it seems like he switches perspectives, everything before the second "I float" is from the guy's perspective, and the rest is from the girl's. Just a guess, but it makes sense to me. And if so, the guy messed her up pretty bad, and possibly was the one to cause her to question her religion.
Just some small corrections:
"The James was good TO me," not for me.
"The way you LAUGHED with all your friends," not left.
"We learn it all, once we could comprehend," not we learn what we can comprehend.
Great song!
I'm pretty sure the last 2 verses to the song are about a priest that molested him. The priest is asking him to take his clothes off, 'And oh, take off your clothes, stand by the window So I can see the scar that sits below your naval And oh, with the Rosary, I wish that was me How I wish I could rest upon your chest forever I float, I float, I float.' He feels as if being a piece of jewelry would be better. Also, how he has the same scar beneath the navel.. the priest is doing it because he was molested as a child too.
He wishes he believed in heaven and God but when the priest did that to him, and ruined his life of 16 years, he can't believe anymore. 'My innocence must have caught his eye Enough to ruin the last 16 years of my life'
Just some thoughts me and my friend were talking about.
I think the song has a heavy tone of religion, but tied to it I think that the song is about growing up, or even corrupting yourself. To me it sounds like he is own voyeur, hence "the same scar sits below my navel"
I wonder if the "scar that sis below your navel" is rape? i haven't seen anyone talk about this. but that maybe when he talks about it the first time he's talking about raping her, or at least sexually violating her by watching her. and the the second time he says it is when the priest is raping him.? also, the name of the song. this seven digit pin code. like, he believes that if he gets this girl's phone number everything will be better.
it could be that he hates her because she has the same scar( i.e. she probably got molested by the priest as well) and she can continue on with her life normally unlike him.
