The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Step out the door and it feels like rain
That's the sound (that's the sound) on your window pane
Take to the streets but you can't ignore
That's the sound (that's the sound) you're waiting for
You feel that your world starts crashing down
Whenever you're world starts crashing down
Whenever your world starts crashing down
That's when you find me
Yeah God love your soul and your aching bones
Take a breath, take a step, maybe down below
Everyone's the same
My fingers to my toes
We just can't get a ride
But we're on the road
If ever your world starts crashing down
Whenever your world starts crashing down
Whenever your world starts crashing down
That's when you find me
(Yeah) Lost 'til you're found
Swim 'til you drown
Know that we all fall down
Love 'til you hate
Strong 'til you break
Know that we all fall down
If ever your world starts crashing down
Whenever your world starts crashing down
If ever your world starts crashing down
That's when you'll find (find) me
Lost 'til you're found
Swim 'til you drown
Know that we all fall down
Love 'til you hate
Strong 'til you break
Know that we all fall down
All fall down, we all fall down, all fall down
We all fall down, all fall down, all fall down
Lost 'til you're found
Swim 'til you drown
Know that we all fall down
Love 'til you hate
Strong 'til you break
Know that we all fall down

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
go the cello!!!
what a mesmerising performance. the lyrics are simple, but they describe me perfectly. just yesterday i had a friend come to me with his world crashing down. my media player was on shuffle and this song came on and i had a bit of a laugh. i was told that all OneRepublic songs have 'religious meanings' (what? as if they can't have any other interpretations?) meanings and interpretations are two COMPLETELY different things. interpretation implies opinion, while meaning implies FACT.
oh, and after having said all that, angela shut up you blind sheep. so you can twist words around to make the song about God, that just drives me nuts. god doesn't love your aching bones. he loves you if you're heterosexual, white, rich and you donate lots of money.
so true i back this up a hundred %
"he loves you if you're heterosexual, white, rich and you donate lots of money."<br /> Sorry, but that's not true. God loves you no matter who you are. And I suppose people think that OneRepublic songs have "religious meanings" (it would probably be Christian meanings, btw), because the members of the band are Christians. But that doesn't mean that they have to be seen that way, nor that every one of them have meanings relevant to God/Christianity.<br /> <br />
Might I just say, that last line is honestly one of the single most idiotic thing I have ever heard, and I can only hope and pray you do not go around preaching that to people.
