Go Square Go! Lyrics

if he wants tae fight you
at the school gates
hawf past four grab your bag
don’t you be late
if he wants to hit you
hit you in the face
if he wants to hurt you
in front of your mates
if he wants you to run away
run away run away
dont you fuckin' run away

go square go!

dont you wait for the bell
to ring ding-a-ling-a-ling
one step forward then a
bada-bada-bing
don’t you make me
go down to the pub
with my mates knowing
some individual smashed you up
you know its just something
that you’ll have to face
face to face
man to man
here and now
biff bang pow

go square go!

a don’t really feel too good
my heart is beating faster
my da' told me
no' to come hame
if I don’t kill this bastart
my da' is right, my da' is right
my da' is right, my da' is right
win, lose or draw s'awright
if a don't fight a can't go home

here we, here we
here we fucking go

I love the simplicity of this song and how it says volumes about coming of age. I've always had mixed feelings about that part of boy life. As a woman, I wish they didn't have to prove themselves physically. Who wants there little boy to come home with a black eye and a fat lip? But, it seems to be a rite of passage, and no one wants their kid to be bullied either. The little guy taking his dad's words to heart is both heart-breaking and somehow heart-warming. By the time it builds to the anthemic 'here we, here we, here we fucking go' at the end, it has you cheering without reservation for the little square. I can imagine that part being taken up by every footballer in Britain! Go, Glasvegas, go.

Hmmm... just found out that a square go in Scotland is a fair fight, so we aren't rooting for a little square. Or maybe we are, but silly American me didn't get the square fight. So I stand corrected. :)

I'm not so sure that we are meant to be sympathetic to the father figure who pressures his own son in to a fight with someone (presumably) bigger than him. he seems to have some sort of macho-complex which he is trying to hoist on to his timid son.

just my interpretation though

to songyone: yeah, you're pretty much dead-on with all that you've said. i suppose my maw wouldnt have liked to see me coming in wi a burst face but it's something that all boys have to do at some point, yknow...?

but, as for his dad's words, they're spot on, the dad in the song knows the best way to cut out the bullying is for the lad to stand up to them.

but it's not meant to be the cheesy sounding "go, square, go!" ..the boy isn't a "little square". nobody gets called a "square" in glasgow. it's meant to mean "let's go, let's have a square go..ya prick" kind of thing. scottish slang an' a' that.

aye hoggys ryt, im from ayr which isnt that far from glasgow so iv got a fair handle on the west of scotland dialect but to be honest i cant listen to this without gutting myself, it just sounds so fucking cheesey to me, a square go in ayr is very rarely fair, iv been square go'od, hit then as i go to hit back the guiy pulled a knife on me, maybe im wrong but i dont think the vocalist has a proper grip on what its lik, i meen i know hes went through it and all that but im stil talking even at school theres always a wee arsehole with a knife wiling to square go ye to boost his ego

I feel that this song means alot more to someone from Glasgow, so this is the look on it from a 14 year old boy from Glasgow, 1st i have noticed alot of people in the comments misunderstanding the lyrics were it says "go square go" a square go is a Glasgow term for a fair fight which people say when they are like provoking someone.

In Glasgow fighting is just the way we live and wether we know we are going to lose or not, you have to fight, everyone disrespects someone for running from a fight, if you fight and lose, then you still get respect, i really do get what he says about his dad, i was always brought up like that, i guess its like shame on your dad if you lose.

Alot of people say that this is a sad song, but it makes me happy, it reminds me of the Glasgow culture, most people say thats a bad thing but the adreniline, people who have been brought up in Glasgow will understand. and for some reason it always makes me feel as if im actually getting ready for a fight, especially the "Here we fucking go" bit, I love chanting that so much.
