Dirty Great Monster Lyrics

There's a Dirty Great Monster
in this house
we pretend that it's not there
and there's no escape from it's grip
but nobody seems to care

Do you ever wonder ?
about the days when we were straight
but Daddy got the hunger
so much to hide
we learned to lie

So watch yourself in the hallway
you're not supposed to know
cause we're all afraid of each other
we're the victims in this show

Well do you ever wonder
about the days
when we were straight
when Daddy got the hunger
too much to hide, we learned to lie
silently outnumbered
we made mistakes, when we were straight
now we're all going under
so with a sigh
we say goodbye...

John Taylor thinks it's about kids in an abusive household. I thought it sounded like that's what it's about.

I don’t like to think for the artist on explaining or interpreting inspiration for a song (I did fib a lot on Skin Divers, Hey she’s 9 and my Son is 14 let him figure it out later). Robert S"

“Thanks for your interest. I’m sorry but you may have to fib some more to your daughter or you could explain to her the truth. The truth is that “Dirty GREAT Monster” is about someone close to my extended family, I am really not at liberty to be any more specific than that. My own personal DGM would probably have been Mr. Ponsford, deputy headmaster and his swishing cane … “this is going to hurt me a lot more than it hurts you” … bollocks did it. whooosh, s”

Very much comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable. Very sad that this is based on someone Simon knows, too. When I first learned the lyrics, I perceived it as what Simon is probably trying to subtly say.
