Cold Bread Lyrics

Well I'm sure you're near
And I can almost smell you
But the winds are up at the walls again

I can hear you coming
Heaven helped you coming
I believe in heaven it's a way away

Did you learn just how I loved you?
Did you see how far I'd been?
Would you meet me in an hour?
I could tell you what I've seen
What I've seen

Cold bread, cold bread
We had

Put your wine in water
Pull your chips back in
So you crawl like a crab across Blackfriars Bridge
Suffer naught to fate
Hit the homeward road
I'm a bowling green
I'm a livery boy

Have a heart that skips a beat
Oh come on
Roll along for free
In the middle of the morning
Swap your drinking nights with me
With me

Cold bread, cold bread
We had
Cold bread, cold bread
We had

I can live with dying
I can chew my bit
Play pander to my senses
And hijack my head
It's the rhythm of moving
And a rolling and a rattle
Its a giving instead
It's a well-sprung bed
We can roll around forever
We can pray for all we've been
We can knock it hell for leather
We can call it all a dream
All a dream

Cold bread, cold bread
We had
Cold bread, cold bread
We had

For your outward bound
Remember what we found

Just pedantic things:

But I think it's "I've a heart which skips a beat" And "Livery boy" - as in a stable-hand?

x

I agree on both points :)

Also, I believe he says:

Play pander to my senses not Play panic to my senses

Put your wine in water Pull your chips back in So you crawl like a crab across Blackfriars Bridge.

Not sure about the next bit.

it goes:

Put your wine in water Pull your chips back in So you crawl like a crab across Blackfriars Bridge ??? Hit the homeward road I'm a bowling green I'm a livree boy I'm a heart that skips a beat Oh come on Roll along for free In the middle of the morning Swap your drinking nights with me With me

I'm 99% sure.

Still can't work out the line after "Blackfriars Bridge", but after that it's

Hit the homeward road I'm a bowling green, I'm a livery boy Have a heart that skips a beat Oh come on, roll along for free

i think the part missing is:

suffer not to fade

Thank yous! All done :)

I read on a website that the missing lyrics are "suffer none to fade"....

but to me it sounds like "suffer not to fade"

The lyrics on that website started that verse off wrong though ("would you whine in water") so i guess that justifies me disagreeing with the missing lyrics... Here is the link:

You're right you just spelled it wrong. The line is "suffer nought to fade". "Nought" just being a different word for "nothing".

I'm pretty sure he says:

So you crawl like a crab across Blackfriar's Bridge Suffer not to fate Hit the homeward road

So, I've got the vinyl in front of me which contains the lyrics. It's free verse, but I'll put it into stanzas as you lot have above. Some of the lyrics written down are different from what he sings, but most are the same. Lovely song!

Cold Bread

Well I'm sure you're near, and I can almost smell you, But the winds are up at the walls again. I can hear you coming-Heaven helped you coming- I believe in heaven it's a way away.

Did you learn just how I've missed you? (recording: "how I loved you") Did you see how far I've been? Would you meet me in an hour? I could tell you what I've seen... what I've seen

Cold Bread... Cold Bread... we had.

Put your wine (not whine) in water pull your chips back in I saw you crawl like a crab across black friar's bridge Suffer naught to fate (as in, "take no chances"), hit the homeward road, I'm a bowling green, I'm a livery boy

Have a heart that (which) skips a beat Oh, come on! Roll along for free In the middle of the morning. Swap your drinking nights with me... with me.

Cold Bread... Cold Bread... we had. (x2)

Genius musical interlude.

I can live dying, I can chew my bit, And play pander to my senses and hijack my head Eat the rhythm of moving and a rolling and a rattle. It's a giving instead, it's a well sprung bed, We can roll around forever, We can pray for all we've been, We can knock it hell for leather We can call it all a dream... all a dream

Cold Bread... Cold Bread... we had. (x2)

Thanks so much. Those were the lyrics I thought he said.

I think it's 'boreen green' as in the colloquial irish term meaning 'green country road' which would be a reference to the scots song 'Star of the county down' Also, it's spelt 'livery', meaning clothing, or uniform.
