Who Can I Be Now? Lyrics

Everybody's raised
in blindness
Everybody knows it's true
Everybody feels that
everything is real,
anybodys' point of of view
Nobody can break
their bondage
Everyone can feel
their chains
But even in my life
I knew you found your sight
and nothing would be
quite the same
Please help me
Who can I be now?
You found me
Who can I be?
Felled apart, you found me
Now can I be now?
You found me
Now can I be real?
Can I be real?
[ somebody real ]
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
If it's all a vast creation
Putting on a face that's new
Some-one has to see, uhh,
row for him and me
Some-one, might as
well be you
Up in Heaven, any angel
writes a special game to play
Oh-ho, could we, could
we make a star
to snatch their angels, boy
Made you row, boy, every day
Please help me
Who can I be now?
You found me
Who can I be?
Felled apart, you found me
Now can I be now?
You found me
Now can I be real?
Can I be?
Who can I be now?
You found me
Who can I be?
Felled upon, you found me
Now can I be now?
You found me
No-o-ow can I, can I be real?
Can I be real?
Can I be real?
Can I be?
[ Who ] can I be?
Oh babe, babe
[ Now ] Yeah, can I be [ now ] ?
You found me
[ Now ] can I be free?
Can I...

Cover art for Who Can I Be Now? lyrics by David Bowie

This is an outtake from the Young Americans sessions. It's more of a ballad than a song itself. You have to figure out what it means. As far as this song goes, it's not just looking at the lyrics to find out what it means. You have to listen closely.

I'm surprised seeing just one comment to this beautiful ballad. The whole "Young Americans" album is excellent, in Bowie's discography I appreciate only "1.Outside" more.

"metamorphic illumination of the future" - this way I'm feeling right now about the song

My Opinion

I kind've get a feeling of Bowie trying to break free from what is expected of him. I believe this was the first album after breaking free from Tony Defrese who pretty much reamed him and left him broke. I feel like he finally can see with out being blinded by the flashy lifestyle that Defrese made for him to make him a star. Bowie says "Who can i be now, now can I be real? Now can I be free?" Just my first impression.
