This is an outtake from the Young Americans sessions. It's more of a ballad than a song itself. You have to figure out what it means. As far as this song goes, it's not just looking at the lyrics to find out what it means. You have to listen closely.
I'm surprised seeing just one comment to this beautiful ballad. The whole "Young Americans" album is excellent, in Bowie's discography I appreciate only "1.Outside" more.
"metamorphic illumination of the future" - this way I'm feeling right now about the song
I kind've get a feeling of Bowie trying to break free from what is expected of him. I believe this was the first album after breaking free from Tony Defrese who pretty much reamed him and left him broke. I feel like he finally can see with out being blinded by the flashy lifestyle that Defrese made for him to make him a star. Bowie says "Who can i be now, now can I be real? Now can I be free?" Just my first impression.
