This song is about drugs and depression, no question. The oil tanker, cargo airplane are metaphors for syringes.

He is getting ready to melt his crack, sends him sky high, same thing with the floating in the atmosphere thing too. Not knowing whether it is midnight or afternoon obviously fits into this as well. The whole second verse is about the effects of crack while your taking it, or his own personal experience with it.
no that's f*cken stupid, don't just assume its about drugs. All of his songs are filled with metaphors that can be interpreted in many ways. But strawberry avalanche does sound like a very detailed mushroom trip.

Adam Young (singer and lyricist of owl city) is absolutely opposed to any drug use and none of his songs have any metaphors to any drugs or mushrooms. as for strawberry avalanche: "I spent last summer mountain climbing with a host family in Tibet and actually witnessed a live avalanche from across an immense ravine. Needless to say, it was both terrifying and awe inspiring. After returning home that night, I slouched on the couch and ate a bowl of Cheerios with fresh strawberries. I thought getting hit in the face by a huge strawberry avalanche would be the most romantic...

this is definately one of my favorite songs. and i think its about that one place that you can get away from every trouble and strife to relieve urself of stress.
