Grace (Hudson & Wells Demo) Lyrics

I have to admit I haven't changed
Playing card houses still covering my landscape
I never expected you to stay
As I'm grabbing for these crumbs and cold loose change

Stumbling down in a frenzy of dark night
Someone sooner said now you see you'll be alright
It's just a resemblance in the shadows of bright light
You follow me down, follow me down, follow me down again

God, I admit, I've loved these chains
Crawling around this cage sometimes has its advantages
I know someday this could get old
I need you to love me out of this great big gaping hole

Stumbling down in a frenzy of dark night
Someone sooner said now you see you'll be alright
It's just a resemblance in the shadows of bright light
You follow me down, follow me down, follow me down again

Follow me down, down again
Follow me down, down again

I have to admit I haven't changed
And i know i have to admit I've loved these chains

Stumbling down in a frenzy of dark night
Someone sooner said now you see you'll be alright
It's just a resemblance in the shadows of bright light
You follow me down, follow me down, follow me down again

Follow me down
Follow me down
Follow me down
Follow me down...

Cover art for Grace (Hudson & Wells Demo) lyrics by Jars of Clay

This is an earlier version of the song that can be found on their rarities disc "The White Elephant Sessions". A few lines from the verses were swapped around before the final version was recorded for "If I Left the Zoo". The chorus is also completely different in this version - it's darker, more in line with the desperation of some of the songs on "Much Afraid". It's interesting to note that this version of the song does not actually contain the word "Grace" in the lyrics, which makes me wonder if that was the original title of the song. (The word appears in the chorus in the final version.)
