Handsome Furs Hate This City Lyrics

woke up with blankets and buildings with jaws
stuck to the sheets, clammy with noon
we wish for night-time, a darkening screen
hoping the heart is just a machine

oh, there was home (x2)

this one is vicious, a sinister lean
we haunted the staircase where small ghosts have been
we knew that heaven was stretched out and wide
pinned to the sky, pinned to the sky

oh, there was home (x2)
oh, life is long and hollow (x4)

we hate this city and its drone (x4)

so black out a million screens
and wires up the floor

baby we can get you anything you want
anytime you want
but you'll wonder what its for

so black out a million screams
and wire ourselves to the floor

baby we can get you anything you want
anytime you want
but you'll wonder what its for

I would have though Montreal or Vancouver, but I like all of those cities (so long as I don't have to live in them for long). The images in this song are splendid.

In my opinion, this song is about forgetting about modern technology, and opening your heart without the machine. I think it's also about how materialistic people are these days and completely forget about love.

Also, it's "Opened my heart, just a machine"

I agree with schimmi. especially, when it comes to the end of the song: "...so black out a million screams and wire ourselves to the floor

baby we can get you anything you want anytime you want but you'll wonder what its for"

Basically, it could represent every industrialized fucking city of the world, not just particular one =)

"oh, there was home (x2) oh, life is long and hollow (x4)

we hate this city and its drone (x4)"

There was home, when you're young, when you had nothing to worry about. And now, welcome to routine. Busy buzzy piece of...life.

I believe the last line is really "but you won't know what it's for."

But, like ya'll said, it could be any cold, heartless, sprawling city around the world. Also, I think they are commenting on the commercialism, or consumerism that exist in most homes, stockpiles of stuff with "wires on the floor" that people don't even know how to use. And people waste most of their lives to earn money to collect all this crap, a "long and hollow" life devoid of meaning.

Love the song and love this husband and wife duo....
