Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.
I won't waste away
I won't let this take me down
I can't survive
As long as I keep it around
I wish it would fade
But it will just sell me out
Over and over and over
I cried out loud
Somebody save me
Somebody save me
The race I run
I keeps me farther on
The man I could become
The damage done
I want to wash the filth away
Till there is none
I run till I break
From the way it was killing me
Profuse to the day
I'll suffer afraid to speak
I carry the shame
And beg for a remedy
How long must I live
With the damage of my disease
Somebody save me
Somebody save me
The race I run
I keeps me farther on
The man I could become
The damage done
I want to wash the filth away
Till there is none
The race I run
I keeps me farther on
The man I could become
The damage done
I want to wash the filth away
Till there is none
I won't let this take me down
I can't survive
As long as I keep it around
I wish it would fade
But it will just sell me out
Over and over and over
I cried out loud
Somebody save me
Somebody save me
The race I run
I keeps me farther on
The man I could become
The damage done
I want to wash the filth away
Till there is none
I run till I break
From the way it was killing me
Profuse to the day
I'll suffer afraid to speak
I carry the shame
And beg for a remedy
How long must I live
With the damage of my disease
Somebody save me
Somebody save me
The race I run
I keeps me farther on
The man I could become
The damage done
I want to wash the filth away
Till there is none
The race I run
I keeps me farther on
The man I could become
The damage done
I want to wash the filth away
Till there is none

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
well! maybe this song is appeared on the album as a bonus track, but it's better than almost all of the songs we hear on the radio nowadays. does anyone else think the solo is a bit like metallica's Fade to Black?
The chorus is wrong. It's supposed to say:
The race I run It keeps me farther from the man I could become
This song is amazing, so annoyed it wasn't on the version of the CD that I have!
I won't waste away, I won't let this take me down I can't survive as long as I keep it around I wish it would fade, but it will just sell me out
Over and over and over, I cry out loud - "somebody save me... somebody save me..."
The race I run, it keeps me farther from the man I could become The damage done, I want to wash the filth away 'til there is none
I run 'til I break from the weight of what's killing me Profuse to the day, I suffer, afraid to speak I carry the shame and beg for the remedy How long must I live with the damage of my disease?
An anthem to all of us who struggle after the damage done has destroyed everything. I did not make any big mistakes. Just many tiny harmless mistakes honestly trying to help. Now the damage done is too big. Heavy lyrics for heavy hearts. It hurts like hell but relax, listen to Alter Bridge and get up. Thank you AB for this music that inspires me to fight another day.
