The songs basically about a gguy who messes/fucks about with love and then feigns ignorance when he gets hurt himself

And I think its saying he wasn't ready for love (he was naive and ignorant) and that he didn't know what to expect ("In the story I was told...")

The "fools were meant to fu.ck you" bit, I think, is referring to himself, saying he only meant to f.uck her but he ended up falling in love through naivety and ignorance. And that led to him getting hurt.

So basically he's saying he fell in love because he was too ignorant and then ended up getting hurt as a result of it.
