The Test Lyrics

All I can see is as far as my headlights can show me,
and all of the roads look the same in each state that I drove in.
As I grip the wheel and I drift away, wishing I could wake up just a second too late
so that I could see heaven and I get a taste, but I just keep going.

So here is to the promise of glamorous living
you must drink up now cause it’s all that you’re getting.
If you haven’t been tested then you certainly will,
and I promise it’s going to kill.

All I can think is how much I‘d kill to be sleeping.
Squinting my eyes my minds drifting to secrets I’m keeping
and the long hauling trucks are parked in their stops
just like luminous ghosts of things that once was
The rigs all look so empty when framed by their lights

and that’s how I’m feeling
so here is to promise of glamorous living
you must drink up now if you haven’t been tested you certainly will
and I promise it’s going to kill.

It’s all at their expense
if this is real than I’m a fake.
At least I feel important. I won’t lie I lie to get paid.

So here’s to the promise of glamorous living
you must drink up cause it’s all you’ll be getting
if you haven’t been tested you certainly will
and I promise that it’s going to kill.

The way that I see this song is that it's about living for the right things...

"So here's to the promise of glamorous living..." This is about the world's view of success... getting all the things that you want. "You must drink up now, cause it's all that you're getting." All the things on earth will fade away... if your possessions here are your real treasures, then take what you can get while you're alive, because there will be no reward for you in heaven.

"The long hauling trucks are parked in their stops..." I think these trucks refer to people who have everything they want ... "...just like luminous ghosts of something that once was. The rigs all look so empty when framed by their lights." ...these people used to have real value in heavenly things, but now their "lights" (things that they have) have left them empty and useless (that's why they're parked). These trucks are meant to do much more, but they carry nothing on the inside, so they have no value. What's the point of driving a truck if there's nothing to deliver?

I think this song is just about putting value in the right things, and not getting caught up in the world.

I love your way of explaining this song.

What I take from the line "the long hauling trucks are parked at their stops" is referring to people, and their journeys through life (similar to that of a truck through out the day). Like you said later, the lights symbolize what they have to show for it.

But at the end of the day's travel (the end of life), the only thing left to show are these lights.

ORGASMIC?

yes, i think so.

Although the word orgasmic may not apply to this song especially when referring to the lyrics, the singer's voice IS very orgasmic to me. Especially in his son Seattle. idk how to explain it but I just love his voice.

Now what I think about the meaning: To me it seems that they're talking about how fame affects artits and this is a very well-fitting song for their first album. I think it's to help remind them to stay on the right path and stick to their beliefs because when judgement day comes they will not recieve eternal life if they...

This songs about being on the road all the time and the band being separated from their lives, families, loves, and friends.

Actually, the whole album basically has this theme.

This song, I believe, is about how being in a band and being on the road all the time just plain wears you out.

In the first verse, the writer is driving the tour van or bus, and its late at night. He can only see as far as the headlights reach. He is tired. He wants to fall asleep and wake up just late enough that he will get in a crash and die so that he can go to heaven, but he just keeps going.

The chorus is about how they are getting a taste of fame, but that they are also continually being tested to see if fame is what they really want.

The second verse is about glancing to the side of the road and seeing all the trucks parked at the truck stops, and wishing he could be with them. The lights illuminating them made them look empty, and he feels empty inside.

And I think the bridge is talking about how they are on the road for themselves, and it is hurting those that they love.

These are just my thoughts.
