Open Water Lyrics
Ten thousand men
sleep down with Davy Jones;
with stolen treasure they tithe.
The open water
chills me to my bones,
but it's the only place that I feel alive.
The ocean floor
begins to disappear;
I sense that terrible depth.
The open water
is my only fear,
but I'll sail as long as I still have breath in me.
I'm starting to
believe the ocean's
much like you,
because it gives
and it takes
away.
Between the devil
and the deep blue sea,
I stare into the abyss.
The open water
is an awful thing,
But I'm anxious till the anchor is
aweigh.
I'm starting to
believe the ocean's
much like you,
because it gives
and it takes
away.

I agree with this song being about God and life.
I'm starting to believe the ocean's much like you, because it gives and it takes away.
The ocean is like God because he gives us his wonderful love and forgiveness but also he takes things away from us in our lives to tear our hearts (death of a family member, moving to another state) and also God takes away things away from us to make our lives more Christ-like (temptations, drugs, alcohol).
The OPEN WATER is my only fear, but I'll sail as long as I still have breath in me.
The open water is like life. Life, like the open water, is a scary thing. We must keep striving through life even when it is tough.
That's what it means to me.
Does anyone else love how it says 'the ocean's much like you' instead of 'you're much like the ocean' wich is the more so-called logical way to say it, considering the ocean is this promordial.. thing and we are just, people? It makes me happy. anywayyyyyy...
whether this is a reference to god or love, the metaphor is incredible. Such emotion. Just reading and imagining your own a lonely boat on the open water, it's frightening in a sense.
i wish i were a pirate.
Nice, you caught a couple things I didn't. I had "tithe" instead of "die" and "fog" instead of floor.
Btw, I think it's "But I'm anxious 'til the anchor rests."
Little corrections from book.

I'm not sure of the rest of the song, but I think in the chorus he must be comparing God to the ocean...because it gives and takes away.
I'm not sure what this song is really about but I think it's about God and life in general. "I'm starting to believe the ocean's much like you, because it gives and it takes away."- There are ups and downs.
