Kings Upon The Main Lyrics

The lesson you'd do well not to forget
Your life could be the one it's wisdom saves
At sea, where you're beleaguered and beset
On every side by strife of wind and waves

Despite the best of maps and the bravest men
For all their mighty names and massive forms
There'll never be and there has never been
A ship or fleet secure against the storms

When kings upon the main have clung to pride
And held themselves as masters of the sea
I've held them down beneath the crushing tide
Till they have learned that no one masters me

But grace can still be found within the gale
With fear and reverence, raise your ragged sail

My interpretation: It is important to learn that no matter how great I think I am, I am mortal and death is unconquerable. However, if there is love and faith, then life is worth living.

We are beggars all..

(quoted from an interview with dustin)

"The Water sonnet deals with man’s pride, and the futility and idiocy of that pride, come face to face with the power of the sea.”

You spelled main wrong.

Main is, I believe, an abbreviation of main deck.

Thanks for the link

Thanks for catching that. Wanted to just copy + paste them, but the site I found it on was a flash player so couldn't be copied... so I was forced to type them as best I could while the short clips from all 4 CD's was playing and got me all excited hehe.

Speaking of the flash site, for those who haven't seen it and want to see it (it contains short teasers of all the songs from all 4 CD's along with the full digital sea song) the link is:

http://grid.vagrant.com/grid/intros/thrice/index.html

When loaded up it starts digital sea (atleast from what i've seen) just click the circle inside the square to change it to the teaser track and it will blow your mind... yes... teasers blew my mind.

where did you guys find this track?

Yeah, the four sonnets are supposed to be written from the perspective of the element that they correspond to. So epic. And so clever. Aghgahg. I can't wait any longer. Five whole days!!! How do I survive this kind of anticipation.

The track itself is not out, just the lyrics along with short clips from all 24 songs:

http://grid.vagrant.com/grid/intros/thrice/index.html

The four circles on the outside is where the lyrics are, the right one being water, and top being fire (the Earth and Air sonnet lyrics are not posted, just a distorted page of where it will be).

Also there's 4 full songs up on a radio broadcast you can listen to (it's up until next week, then the CD comes out so it really doesn't matter much). The songs are "Digital Sea" "The Messenger" "Open Water" and "The Arsonist".

http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/shortfastloud/default.htm

click the listen in the upper right and choose how you want to stream, the messenger is the first song playing at around 36 minutes into it (you can fastforward, don't have to listen to the stuff before) and then in between the other three songs is an interview with Dustin.

Sorry forgot to add, if you're interested in the abc.net thing when you click the "listen" button, on the drop down menu you must select "short.fast.loud".

This cd is sooooo good.

amen to that. hella amazing.

song's about life. i think written from the religious standpoint about how people forget about god as soon as life begins to work out for them, or buy into something else, and how it ends up hurting them.

it also corresponds to losing loved ones to pride and the illusion of invincibility (i'd say safety, but that'd be too tacky) for the secular fans.
