Really. NRIF completely trumps The Shade of Poison Trees, even if sales don't prove it. Don't get me wrong, I love Chris, but this new CD is yet another letdown. Whereas Nick and the boys really pulled through.

i love this song. but i think the song is talking about not living your life to please others or to do what others want you to do, but to live it how you want to. it's obvious when he sings lines like "i'm not concerned with pleasing..." and "i don't believe in anything" that the girl or critics are saying. he's saying to stay grounded "fill your shoes with cement" and focused on those whom you care about.
"I'm not concerned with pleasing All those little pricks and all their little scenes." [I thought it was brats, but pricks works, too.]
In concert this made me laugh, because it's all I saw when I looked around.
I think the song is about the band and how they sing and perform, etc for them. its not about the critics or the fans but about being who they are and surrendering themselves to that. They mention how everyone should follow their own apth liek they are with reckless abandonment which is where i get my idea of not caring about consequences to do what you want and surrenedering yourself to it. "we are earthquakes...need" lines are about how the fame and popularity is a part of the job that they hate but since their music can change things and cause influence it is a necessity.
