Matters of Blood and Connection Lyrics

Why do you speak with that accent now?
Everyone knows your not from the streets
You went prep school in Cambridge
With daughters and sons of the privagled elite
The fortunes from shipping and industry
The futures and yacht clubs and tales
So why do you speak with that accent now?
Everyone knows your moonlighting here

To avale yourself of your heritage for a season or two in the sun
Draw wealth from funds in the trust thanks to the fathers of fortune and sons
For us it's a matter of charging the gates
For you it's a matter of blood and connections
Of blood and connections

So who do you fool with that costume now?
Everyone knows your not who you seem
You've got a hard way about you
For someone whose passage is already played

By the sins and schemes of your father and the infinite reach of his arm
Draw wealth from funds in the trust thanks to the fathers of fortune and sons
For us it's a matter of charging the gates
For you it's a matter of blood

Drink well from your bottomless cup and bask in your good fortune
For us it's a matter of charging the gates
For you it's a matter of blood and connections

So where will you be when you tire of the fun, the escape, the shrade, and your time in the sun?
I know everyone does their own reinvention but yours has a taste thats hard to swallow
What will you tell of your tenure with us?
Will you build yourself like the size of your hunt?
If there anything like what you've been telling us the stories will make true believers of the chumps and the fools.

Why do you speak with that accent now?
Everyone knows your not from the streets

it's like he's coaxing this girl who is putting on a show, trying to escape her family and its wealth, even though to everyone else it just sounds like the doors are already opened for her just because of her good fortune while everyone else has to charge the gates just to get by.

..but she doesn't want to be known as that girl who just has everything. and obviously you can't buy happiness. he knows that. so while her blood and connections get her by, she's still a hardened person while she's just living off of her parents. so while she wants to be normal, she's still just taking the money and living off of them. even though she doesn't want to, she still takes the money and just parties and vacations. but from what he's heard, eventually she's going to have to just move on.

Sounds to me like the song is about our president bush going to war for no real reason other then wanting to. "Why do you speak with that accent now" could refer to the fact that he was brought up in a life of privilege and all the sudden sounds like a "man of the people".

"To avail yourself of your heritage for a season or two in the sun Draw wealth from funds in the trust thanks to the fathers of fortune and sons" Sounds like going to war and using the money from the men in his position before him.

"By the sins and schemes of your father and the infinite reach of his arm" His father started the war when he was in office and now little bush wanted to finish it for him.

"So who do you fool with that costume now? Everyone knows your not who you seem You've got a hard way about you For someone whose passage is already played"

He acts like a hard ass when really it's just a front

I could be wrong, but if you know anything about the Bush administration you'd see what I see.

"ten year" is actually "tenure"

Lyssie, Please keep your ignorance away from music that others cherish. Bush went to school in Andover, not Cambridge. That statement, of course, assumes that the song is referring to Cambridge, MA and not Cambridge in England. Also, there is no mention of war, just living off of trust funds (which a high number of people at prep school do).

Anyway, I was trying to figure out where the new tone and lyrical content from this album came from and this song showed me. It sounds to me like CC is starting to meet the people at the "top" and is realizing they aren't so impressive. He's starting to get it.

Yyyyeah...this is the second song I've heard people referring to as being anti-bush. Little Bombs is a bit of a stretch, and this an even bigger stretch. Like 99% of the lyrics make absolutely no sense if you apply them to G.W. Bush, other than the fact that he and his father are both rich.

i agree with iheartbeatles; there is a no way that either of those songs are about george bush. if you want anything close to a political reference by chris carrabba, just read Slow Decay lyrics..about a guy coming back from the war. other than that, i highly doubt it.

This song is certainly a critique of people LIKE Bush. From a prominent New England family, Bush naturally speaks with a new england accent. He is certainly not a Texan and does not have a natural southern accent. Though he was educated in Andover for prep school, it is very close in proximity to Cambridge. He did go to Cambridge to attend Harvard, so it can't be discounted. Carrabba is referencing Cambridge prep schools for the idea of them, while not specifically attacking Bush. I do believe that this song is directed at him. The "time in the sun" and the "tenure with us" is what really proves it for me. The key word is US. It would mean he worked for "US," a group of people. The American people. It is pretty indisputable here, everyone. This song, while he does not give direct attacks on Bush, is directed his way. You don't just directly attack the president in a song. You do it a roundabout way, as Chris has done. Well done, sir.

khofuswiftclaw, I do believe that you're an idiot, so I'll keep my laws off your body if you keep your ignorance off of my music.

-Bush is from Texas. PA is only a high school. His accent is legit. -The song refers to the accent as being a "street" accent. Southern accents are far from "street" accents. -The first stanza ends with the word "here" implying the speaker is in the same place as the subject. If the subject is Bush, where is here that CC can one day be that Bush will one day leave?
