All You Need Is Me Lyrics

You hiss and groan and you constantly moan
But you don't ever go away
That's because
All you need is me

You roll your eyes up to the skies
Mock horrified
But you're still here
All you need is me

There's so much destruction
All over the world
And all you can do is
Complain about me

You bang your head against the wall
And say you're sick of it all
Yet you remain
'Cause all you need is me

And then you offer your one and only joke
And you ask me what will I be
When I grow up to be a man
Uhm, nothing!

There's a soft voice singing in your head
Who could this be?
I do believe it's me

There's a naked man standing, laughing in your dreams
You know who it is
But you don't like what it means

There's so much destruction
All over the world
And all you can do is
Complain about me

I was a small, fat child in a welfare house.
There was only one thing I ever dreamed about
And Fate has just
Handed it to me - whoopee

You don't like me, but you love me
Either way you're wrong
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

You don't like me, but you love me
Either way you're wrong
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone

This has got to be about the media's love/hate relationship with Morrissey and especially the NME.

It's such a witty and observant slight on his critics (and maybe some of his fans) who can't decide whether to build him up or knock him down. I love the section:

There's a soft voice singing in your head Who could this be? I do believe it's me

Can't you just imagine one of those "bandwagon music journalists", the type that the NME is infested with, driving home after drafting a particularly harsh review of Morrissey's new album finding himself involuntarily whistling along to the tune and then realising what he was doing and forcing himself to stop. Just me? Okay then :)

Yeah, I love this song. I agree with many of the other posts that the song is about the reaction of the music press and maybe some of his fans to Morrissey. I think the line 'there's a naked man standing laughing in your dreams, you know who it is, but you don't know what it means' is hilarious in that it states that, yeah whether you like him or not, you can't get him out of your head and of course it inevitably conjures and image of a naked laughing Morrissey in your head- let that image burn in your brain cells music critics! The perspective that Morrissey provides to those who take him too seriously is funny as well- in an era of wars and terrorist attacks, music journalists spend their time writing about and criticizing Morrissey.

The line about a small, fat child in a welfare house is somewhat confusing as Morrissey was neither fat nor grew up in a welfare house. Could be his usual self-deprecation. The line about not liking him but loving him and either way being wrong is confusing as well if taken literally. Perhaps he is saying that his music is best enjoyed if you listen to it objectively without thinking about him personally. But then why does he say we will miss him- it's usually only people that you like that you miss. But then, I think he is just being self-deprecating again, he is not worthy of people feeling strongly or passionately about him, but you have to admit that he is a character that will be missed when he is gone.

Classic Morrissey song. Great to see he can still write such a catchy, clever song at this stage of his career.

OK, here's a mad suggestion. I wonder, I've been listening to the two new morrissey singles and i've thought he doesn't really sound great on them. Almost like he sounds sick. If you were to analyze every morrissey song, about his life coming to an end you'd be there forever. But a couple of lines reallly struck me in this song, like: "I was a small, fat child in a council house There was only one thing I ever dreamed about And Fate has just Handed it to me" And also "Your gonna miss me when I'm gone" Of course I hope i'm wrong about this. Anyone else get that vibe, or just me??

Well, I kinda know what you mean and I hope its not true. But I'm reminded of I Just Want To See The Boy Happy when he says, "let's face it soon I will be dead". Its quite a common theme in his songs of late but I suppose, in a way, it always has been. As for this song, its class. I think hes talking about his fans in this one. They often moan and complain about him, all the time, how hes lettin everyone down all the time and stuff. A lot of them anyway. Hes saying to them however that they need him whatever they complain about. Also aimed at the press aswell I feel, like the NME, they accuse him of racism and stuff but they need him badly to sell their damn magazines. Basically, when there's so much suffering in the world, start complaining about that and stop criticising him for stuff, especially when deep down, you need the man
