Can't Take It With You Lyrics
Never realized how much she brought to the table
'Till I went to sit my cup of coffee where the table used to be
No couch, no bed, no heirloom antique cradle
No more hope for one day startin' that family
Bet she's gainin' fast on Memphis
With a trailer load in tow
Who says you can't take it with you till you go
Chorus:
She got away with everything that I had goin'
And she got away before I could make it all alright
And I got a way with leavin' what needs said unspoken
Hell I even blew the chance I had to say goodbye
Yeah she took her heart and took off down that road
And they say you can't take it with you when you go
Good news is ain't much here left for packin'
Bad new is she left behind a million memories
All the echoes of her cryin' lovin' and laughin'
Left me with nothin' left to do but leave
That old house is in the rearview, ridin' shotgun is her ghost
Who says you can't take it with you when you go
(Repeat Chorus)
Closin' in on Dallas now
Is the best love I've ever known
And they say you can't take it with you when you go
'Till I went to sit my cup of coffee where the table used to be
No couch, no bed, no heirloom antique cradle
No more hope for one day startin' that family
Bet she's gainin' fast on Memphis
With a trailer load in tow
Who says you can't take it with you till you go
She got away with everything that I had goin'
And she got away before I could make it all alright
And I got a way with leavin' what needs said unspoken
Hell I even blew the chance I had to say goodbye
Yeah she took her heart and took off down that road
And they say you can't take it with you when you go
Bad new is she left behind a million memories
All the echoes of her cryin' lovin' and laughin'
Left me with nothin' left to do but leave
That old house is in the rearview, ridin' shotgun is her ghost
Who says you can't take it with you when you go
Is the best love I've ever known
And they say you can't take it with you when you go

"Never realized how much she brought to the table"...Sexist.

You're out of your mind if you actually believe that to be a sexist comment. Eric meant it as "I never realized how much this woman contributed to my life until she was gone". Please don't be so sensitive when interpreting lyrics, especially country lyrics, about 97% of the time country artists are more respectful than anyone else out there.

he doesnt mean what she literally brings to to table... he means what she brought into his life. This song is sad... he realizes how much he is really losing when she leaves... not only the physical things in their home but her love and their future. "No more hope for one day startin' that family" He knows she was his everything now that she is gone... "She got away with everything that I had goin'"He regrets she left before he could attempt to reconcile with her. Great song... I
what is the "it" of can't take it with you when you go?
What I'm confused about is the end of the song... "Closing in on Dallas now, is the best love I've ever known". "And they say, you can't take it with you when you go"... What is he taking?...ya know?
this song is incredible. he is such a clever lyricist. and i'm not really sure why people are confused with him saying "who says you can't take it with you when you go." that is an old saying that i have heard my entire life. only in the saying it is usually talking about when you die you can't take all your worldly posessions with you when you go, but he obviously just put his own clever twist to it.
and answering to sm000's confusion: she is almost to dallas and she was everything to him and she took everything of his (physically and emotionally) with him when she left. hope that helps your confusion some. :-)
and just a note to kaki. you are stupid. if you don't like what eric church has to say then don't listen to him. he doesn't need idiots like you listening to him because there are pleanty of people who love his music. and that doesn't make all of us right wing conservatives or ignorant.
"She got away with everything that I had goin"------------I think that part right there is pretty deep. I dont think he means his physical possessions or anything that she took with her when she left.
I think he means when she left, every single thing great that he had going on in his life is now gone. She was what he had going--physically, emotionally, and mentally. EVERYTHING.
Probably my favorite song by Eric. I listened to this song over 100 times when my first serious gf and I broke up in college. To me, this song captures that emotion you have when someone vitally important in your life disappears and you suddenly realize everything positive they brought into your life. I realize that almost everyone experiences this moment, but I hope that the majority of people out there are able to handle it better than I was.
