This song is about the vicious circle of beeing jealous, I think. He is afraid that she might be interested in other guys ("And there's a chance that a look from a stranger can give you so much more than this.")... and he knows that his way to deal with that might force her to leave him one day (he controls her, wants to know where she is). "Things have never been easy" - he was always a jealous guy and the relationship suffered a lot because of that. "Yes, I saw it happen! It happened, calm down -- calm down!" - he is paranoid and always thinks that she will date other guys when she's going out... he knows that he's wrong ("calm down")... but he can't deal with it all. The beginning is pretty clear cut; it's the ending that perplexes me. I wonder what happened that he is referring to.
