This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Bruce refers to himself as a runaway, run far, far away Catholic but "You can take the boy out of the Catholic church, but can't take the Catholic out of the boy". His music is full of imagery...the Rising, Jesus Was an Only Son, Living Proof, Blood Brothers, on and on. In fact, there will be a class at Rutgers taught by a Rabbi in the spring that deals with the religious imagery, particularly the Old Testament, in his lyrics. He claimed, when asked during the Q an A of the Storytellers performance to have "Three Pagan babies' and has only been in church for weddings and funerals (with the exception of a few times following 9.11). He claims to be "spiritual" but not committed to a particular denomination, but brings the only theology he has been exposed to, into his work sometimes without wanting to. He is a voracious reader and was influenced heavily by Catholic Flannery O Connor..the whole Nebraska album is a direct influence...the meanness of the world, the consequences of sin and such. It has been noted that he spoke of this on his tours as being a love song.
