A Whiter Shade of Pale Lyrics
We skipped a light fandango,
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor.
I was feeling kind of seasick,
But the crowd called out for more.
The room was humming harder,
As the ceiling flew away.
When we called out for another drink,
The waiter brought a tray.
And so it was that later,
As the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
She said there is no reason,
And the truth is plain to see
That I wandered through my playing cards,
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast.
And although my eyes were open,
They might just as well have been closed.
And so it was later,
As the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor.
I was feeling kind of seasick,
But the crowd called out for more.
The room was humming harder,
As the ceiling flew away.
When we called out for another drink,
The waiter brought a tray.
As the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.
And the truth is plain to see
That I wandered through my playing cards,
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast.
And although my eyes were open,
They might just as well have been closed.
As the miller told his tale,
That her face at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.

I googled the meaning of Whiter Shade of Pale and got this site. I wanted to see what it was about. I heard it was about the Canterbury Tales. I have never read Chaucer. I love the song, but taking a stab at the meaning of the lyrics, just reading them, I would say that there was a big throw-down party where people got dog-ass drunk. A woman there, maybe a gypsy type, was a card reader/fortune teller. She saw what was going to happen, but couldn't stop it. Some cute young ladies were there en route to somewhere else, and one of the drunken men ravaged one, whom he scared shitless, and then, realizing what he had done, killed her. That is one gruesome deduction for someone who loves the song so much.
