This City's A Mess Lyrics
Wake up when it's dark outside,
Making small talk with the sky again
Catch a snowflake on my tongue,
Make a wish that daylight comes again
Poke my nose out through the blinds,
Hope to God it sticks this time
Daylight breaks and sun comes up,
Watch as our white Christmas turns to mush
Mush, mush
Baby with the snow outside
It's just you and me and no one else
Talk about the years gone by
Ain't it such a shame how time flies
This city's a mess,
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
This city's a mess,
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
This city's a mess,
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
This city's a mess,
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
Making small talk with the sky again
Catch a snowflake on my tongue,
Make a wish that daylight comes again
Hope to God it sticks this time
Daylight breaks and sun comes up,
Watch as our white Christmas turns to mush
Mush, mush
It's just you and me and no one else
Talk about the years gone by
Ain't it such a shame how time flies
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess
The city's a mess,
The city's a mess

untrue mattyboy! i know who they are and love them. and personally, i like that not a lot of people know about said the whale. it makes them more special.
btw, canadian indie completely owns american indie. i'd move to canada based solely on that.
I know, right? I want to move to Montreal or Canada just for the music scene. They are kicking our asses over there.

Awesome song, by the way.

True that. I'm South African and i think Canadian Indie is really doing great right now, and this is like four years after your post.

To really get the song, you have to recall December 2008, Vancouver (Said The Whale's hometown) and the dump of snow we had at christmas. You have to be a Vancouverite to know how bad of a mess we get with snow, cause we have not a great snow removal force, and of course snow is so rare in Van that no one knows how to drive, so- we had a mess. ("watch as our White Christmas turns to mush....) when it all melts, you have worse accidents as it then freezes to a skating rink consistency. The line about how time flies has a personal meaning for me. Don't it, though?!
p.s. Hear their song "Cammillo The Magician"!
To "get" the song, a winter snowstorm in Vancouver makes sense... however the song was released prior to December 2008 (From wikipedia: Their debut album Taking Abalonia was released in 2007. It was re-released on June 3, 2008 in Canada with seven new songs under the new name Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia.) so it can't be specifically about the Dec 2008 storm.
