I read somewhere that John did this weird song expressley for the fans who overinterpreted his other stuff(although Taupin wrote most of the lyrics).
In Elizabeth Rosenthal's biography "His Song: The Musical Journey of Elton John", it is revealed that this song was inspired by "Sun King" from The Beatles Abbey Road album. Elton said: "I thought it would be great to write a song with English words that didn't mean a thing, but that sounded fantastic when put together..."
That fits to the statement swami7774 wrote.
It's fun to troll the "serious art" crowd. You can take them in if you don't troll too hard or too often. John Lennon kind of abused the privilege, but nobody was expecting Elton John to take a shot at it. I'm sure a bunch of critics with art degrees sat there listening to this track over and over looking for a "real meaning" that simply isn't there. Wonder how many of them published some sort of invented nonsense in a review of the album?
But why an elephant?
