two lovers, who've had a falling out. and the narrator is waiting for the fight to blow over so they can see each other again. I get the impression this is not an entirely uncommon occurrence, that maybe they've gotten in fights like this before, and they separate for a while, but always come back because underneath it all they're so perfect for each other it's like they already lived a whole life as a couple, and have already died of old age sitting in rocking chairs together. they're like ships in a bottle, they can never get very far away from each other.

This song is insane, i get the chills everytime i listen to it.

I agree that its def about first love but also more than that. I think its about the intense shut everything else out kind of love. The kind that feels like its simply meant to be, the kind that never fades and when you expiernce the entire universe makes sense.

I think that last bit there is "the day is gonna come." also, I think he sings the word "out" at the end of:

This song is definitely about two loves, first loves, I think. About love that is innocent and pure, clean and beautiful, without all the messiness of certain mature "adults things" that are in relationships when they get older.

Then the couple possible gets married, and it's been a while. "Since you asked me to be Your cat, your dog, your owl, or bumblebee" Cat, dog, owl, bumble bee, kind of like to hubby?

"You'll walk up to me and erase my memory Can't wait to feel brand new I cant wait to meet you again, friend" Meaning that every time they walk up to him, he falls in love again, forgets all he was thinking of, and sees her the same way he did when they were first in love.

"I think I must have known you in another life I think our rocking chairs used to rock together All night" Him saying that they are true lovers, meant to be. I think that you have your soul mate, and if you don't find them in your first life, you're bound to meet in the next, and this line kind of is like that. How They probably found each other in a past life and managed to find each other again, because they're meant to be.

I think this is about two friends or lovers who haven't seen each other in years and now are going to meet and the song is about the anticipation he feels for this moment as he remembers all those times they had together so long ago and will have again now.

I get a totally different meaning out of this song, not to say I'm right necessarily.. But I've always thought that the song was about a girl that he used to be with, and things didn't work out, so instead of going the rest of their lives without each other they erase the memory of being together so that they can meet once again under different circumstances and have some sort of friendship the second time around. "Tiny ships in bottles, they wont sail too far out..." I've always interpreted as, the two would reacquaint inevitably because they are the ships and there's only so far they can go, before they must turn around and run into each other again.

i swear, i was going to write this song. a congruous one anyway. well i guess i shouldnt let that stop me. to me, this song is about the majesty and magic of innocence, ie youth. or perhaps "the past" in general? today's pile of shit is tomorrow's fonder memories. then someone of shared experience comes into the pic. im thinkin opp sex friend. and apparently theyve fallen out of favor or contact w/ e/ other. there are some strong vibes of reincarnation. like wanting to be made new, meeting in the next life. knowledge of past lives. tooootally feelin that. and btw what is it with this guy and owls. lolol. owls can go to hell. im an owl. this song gives good head. or something equivalent.
