Weighty Ghost Lyrics
I got out of bed today, Swear to God I couldn't see my face
I got out of bed today staring at a ghost
Who forgot to float away, didn't have all that much to say
Wouldn't even tell me his own name
Where'd my body go
Where oh where'd my body go?
Africa or Mexico?
Where or where'd my body go?
Where'd my body go?
Have you seen my ghost?
Staring at the ground?
Have you seen my ghost?
Sick of those goddamn clouds
Are you some kind of medicine man?
Cut the demons out of my head
You can't kill something that's already dead
Just leave my soul alone
I don't need no surgery
Take those knives away from me
Just wanna die in my own body
A ghost just needs a home
I got out of bed today staring at a ghost
Who forgot to float away, didn't have all that much to say
Wouldn't even tell me his own name
Where'd my body go
Africa or Mexico?
Where or where'd my body go?
Where'd my body go?
Staring at the ground?
Have you seen my ghost?
Sick of those goddamn clouds
Cut the demons out of my head
You can't kill something that's already dead
Just leave my soul alone
I don't need no surgery
Take those knives away from me
Just wanna die in my own body
A ghost just needs a home

I think it's an awakening.
When we are young, we see bright futures... we see beer commercial lives or sitcom lives for ourselves. And potential and possibilities and infinity and beyond. Life is just about to begin and it's gonna be so AWESOME!
But the future doesn't always work out like we planned, sometimes we have to go through things that kind of suck and it takes a toll on us. We hit the bottom. It hurts. And then we climb back up.
Time passes
And then we wake up one morning and look in the mirror. And we think of those dreams that are gone. And we think of all the struggles and how far we've come. Part of us hurts and part of us is numb. But we are the sum of both parts, and for the first time, we see this.
I think it's about a person who has no idea who they are, where they're going, or why. They just kind of... doddle around without a purpose. "You can't kill something that's already dead, so leave my soul alone". They're dead inside and they just want to be left alone, but at the same time they're wondering where their soul has gone. It seems like they're very lonely and want attention "Have you seen my ghost?" "A ghost just needs a home". Anyway, I love this song! It's beautifully simple and it's very cute. It's interesting how a song that appears to be about something depressing is so upbeat.
I sense this song is about someone who, for a long time, did not like himself - did not like the person he was. He tried to keep changing himslef for others, to be someone he wasn't. But that never worked for him. Now years have passed and he's looking back at the 'ghostly' life he has been leading when he realizes that he actually misses his old self - or rather that he got cheated out of living an authentic life. Now he's searching for his ghost - his true self - the one he pushed out for so long. He wants to bring back that once hated part of himself (the ghost) and to love, honour and cherish it as being fundemental to his true nature. "A ghost just needs a home". Basically, the person finally accepts himself.
He wakes up. He thinks. He realizes that his whole life has been a blur, and he's lost sight of who he is, where he is, and what he wants. He hardly recognizes himself, and he thinks, "How did I get here? Who am I really?"
He desires help, but not change. Somewhere deep inside, he's still alive, so he doesn't want the probing hands of others trying to patch him up like he's broken. He just wants reassurance. He just wants to be found.
I said they wanted to be left alone and also that they want attention. If that confused anyone, I meant that they're sick of everyone picking on them and they want to be left alone, but they want someone on their side, they want a home at the same time.
in the first verse of this song, he's basically saying how he's really confused and he don't even know himself anymore.
the second verse is saying how he doesn't know where he is (in life) or how he got in his situation.
the chorus is saying "Have you seen my ghost? Staring at the ground?" which is saying "has anyone noticed me being so depressed and alone?" and "Have you seen my ghost? Sick of those goddamn clouds." which is saying how he's sick of being in this situation.
the final verse is basically saying "i want you to help me, but don't try to change me, and just accept me for who i am."
i love this song so much. i don't know why it isn't getting any airtime.
I feel as if the song is about a man feels as if he is disjointed from the World and his surroundings and starts questioning it. He begins to question the veracity of himself and how he feels. An awesome song.
this song is one of my favorite songs right now, and i guess it's juts about someone not sure of themselves.
very helpful comment, i know. ;)
I agree with pretty much everyone here... I dunno, maybe he needs to find out who he really is before he dies? Awesome track.
does anybody else think this song could be about dealing with a tumour or brain cancer of some sort?

the reference to surgery at the bottom maybe? just a thought, i may be taking it too literally of course...
I thought, so too. Or about living with a mental illness or some other disease where your body feels detached from your 'self'.

@rainbowkid I did. I thought that the part where he says "where'd my body go?" was him about to have surgery and having to sign that "donor" form, that damn form you have to sign that asks you to donate your organs should you die in surgery. You wonder where your body parts go, as you disassociate from your own body while signing your name on the dotted line. You look in the mirror one last time and just see a ghost looking back.
