this song seems out of place in the album. In Girl with Golden Eyes, he obviously gets clean and then it goes right into this..... and then after this is Permission where he is obviously clean again. Maybe this was some sort of relapse. I guess I'll have to read the book!
If you read the book, the order and lyrics of the song make so much sense. Girl with Golden Eyes is about both his addiction to heroin (persian) and a futile attempt to get clean by switching to methadone (while still drinking and blowing lines). You should read it, it's amazing!

Nikki doesn't get clean in Girl With Golden Eyes. That song's just saying that he realizes that he needs to get away from heroin before it kills him. Then this song comes on...it's about his near-death experience after over-dosing...and following it is Permission, where he finally tries and successfully gets clean. The song's in the right place. Read the book and you'll see. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with these lyrics.
yea but xXRavenxTressesXx..in girl with golden eyes hes talkin about when he went clean for 2 weeks or however long it was in the book..when hes saying "day 1..day 2" etc..i thought that happened after he died. correct me if im wrong [i let my friend borrow my book therefore i cant check lol]

Actually he did get clean in Girl With Golden Eyes. He just relapsed and on December 23rd, 1987, he was actually declared dead but the hospital managed to revive him. After he broke out from there, he tried to overdose again, so he wouldn't have to live with his addiction. After his second overdose-attempt, he wrote the chorus for this song in his diary. Very powerful lyrics, actually.

i love how this song is right after girl with golden eyes when he gets better and then prmission when he acctually does get better you have to read the book to understand the order he put them in...the part where they walk in and are all like OMG! O.o that part gets me everytime it send shivers down my spine or when its leading up to it my heart is just pounding so fast
aw man, those would have been better lyrics... but the song is still good.
