So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Time to lay claim to the evidence
Fingerprints sell me out but our footprints' washed away
From the docks downtown
It's been getting late for days
And I feel myself deserving of
A little time off
We can kick it, hang for hours
And just mouth off about the world
And how we know it's going straight to hell
Pass me another bottle, honey
The Jager's so sweet
But if it keeps you around, then I'm down
Meet me on Thames Street, I'll take you out
Though I'm hardly worth your time
In the cold you look so fierce
But I'm warming up because the tension's like a fire
We'll hit South Broadway in a matter of minutes
And like a bad movie, I'll drop a line
Fall in the grave I've been digging myself
But there's room for two, six feet under the stars
I should have known better than to call you out
(On a night like this, a night like this)
If not for you, I know I'd tear this place to the ground
(But I'm alright like this, alright like this)
I'm gonna roll the dice before you sober up and get gone
(I'm always in over my head)
Thames Street, I'll take you out
Though I'm hardly worth your time
In the cold you look so fierce
But I'm warming up because the tension's like a fire
We'll hit South Broadway in a matter of minutes
And like a bad movie, I'll drop a line
Fall in the grave, I've been digging myself
But there's room for two, six feet under the stars
Time to lay claim to the evidence
Fingerprints sell me out
But our footprints' washed away
I'm guilty, but I'm safe for one more day
Overdressed and underage (what a let down)
Do you really need to see an ID?
This is embarrassing as hell (what a let down)
But I can cover for it so well
When we're six feet under the stars
Thames Street, I'll take you out
Though I'm hardly worth your time
In the cold you look so fierce
But I'm warming up because the tension's like a fire
We'll hit South Broadway in a matter of minutes
And like a bad movie, I'll drop a line
Fall in the grave I've been digging myself
But there's room for two, six feet under the stars
Six feet under the stars
Six feet under the stars
