I think that this song is about two people who are trying to get over their "past lovers". So that's why they're together. But they're only trying to fool themselves into feeling as though they're over their ex-lovers and are in love with eachother.

It's about two people who are together but theyre both pretending theyre happy when theyre not. It seems mostly physical aswell, but its not what he really wants, he wants to be with "her" who is a "past lover" so basically an ex who he cant get over.
