This is a great song about a girl who has become just an extension of her own ego. She knows that she's the only one that the protagonist in the song loves, but doesn't care. She has no response to the pain she is causing him. She might justify her callous actions by thinking that it isn't her responsibility to him to make him happy, but the sad thing is that she can't see that only someone like him, who really loves her, could make her happy. It reminds me of the mini-series The Thorn Birds, which I love, hence the username. The girl is deeply in love with a priest who'd blind ambition makes his ears mute to her pleas for his love. He is the only one, and he knows, deep down, that this is true, but he doesn't realize until it's too late that the god he is trying to please through his chastity is the god who created her and him to love each other.
