To me this song is simple... it is about a homeless prostitute who lived on the streets for seven years and struggles with a drug addiction.
In the verses, she is talking as if she were talking to people who pass her by on the street. The great twist and "hit" of the song is in the last verse.
In my opinion, I believe when he says "The birth and the death were both over with no one to grieve", he makes a reference that she was pregnant, and it "hits" when he sings the chorus after that verse, because not only is he talking about the woman (who died at the bluff) but he is also talking about the unborn baby. Beautiful Jon.... Beautiful....
I'll be honest, I cried when I first heard this song. Jon shows us that no matter what happens to us in life, or no matter how much we screw it up... we are still HIS children, and He still loves us. =*)

I think that this song is about someone who had something awful happen to them that just changed their life so drastically and how people just tended to ignore her or even worse judge her...and she basically had no one in the world...
I love the line "She's somebody's baby still" I kinda take it as Jon saying "Even though the closest people to you reject you, you will ALWAYS be a child of God."

The chord change between "Autumn when all/Of her nightmares grew fingers" gave me chills the first time I heard the song. The coaction between the lyrical story and the guitar work is amazingly powerful.
The story is straightforward as to its meaning. I don't think there is any question about that. It is extremely refreshing to find that amidst all of the sexual exploitation of women rampant in our culture today, someone has the heart to see that women aren't just sex things. It really makes me think twice when I see women portrayed this way. I know that I wouldn't want anyone looking at my daughter or sister that way, but somehow because of the lack of this connection it becomes acceptable. Even the drugee or prostitute you would never think twice about is somebody's baby.
When Jon Foreman performed this song at Parachute 2007 (in New Zealand) he explained that this song was half based on a true story: he was inspired by a homeless woman he saw everyday in a town he was living in and was struck by the sadness of her situation. And like the previous people have posted, he points out that she's still somebody's baby.

One of the greatest songs in the world from a lyrical point anyways. Jon foreman's a genius. I think it's a biblical reference when he talks about throwing the first stone which is based out of a bible story of people stoning a prostitute leading to the thought that the woman he's writing about is a prostitue from a troubled life. I like the thoughts that she was pregnant at the last verse. Makes sense now that I think about it
This song is about a homeless girl. Though she has no family she is still someones child. She drowns herself in drugs and beer ti try and erase her memories of what has been. It may be that she was beaten or raped, but she has memories that re her hell. She has never had a home to go to so her birth and her death were over alone with no one to be there to greive over her. She may have had a child but she ended her life from either depression or just being drunk. Most likly depression since it was probobly her who called the police.
Maybe the saddest song I have ever heard.
