Paranoid Inlay Lyrics
Serenity is a problem
When you get this close to Heaven
But you really want to see
The wonders of the underworld
They caught Saint Peter's disease
As he rattled his keys
Serenity is a problem
Serenity is a problem
Such a paranoid inlay
Hand-painted, pain by numbers, just join the dots
Serenity is a problem
Serenity is a problem
Bloody British bulldozers
These vegetables are suicidal
It seems concussion suits you
It seems concussion suits you
Dear Diary, I must take risks
I must not be afraid of failure
What do I need to give up?
Crystalline ladders, shiny things, mirror-balls
On a clear day I can see forever
That the underworld is my oyster
When you get this close to Heaven
But you really want to see
The wonders of the underworld
They caught Saint Peter's disease
As he rattled his keys
Serenity is a problem
Such a paranoid inlay
Hand-painted, pain by numbers, just join the dots
Serenity is a problem
Bloody British bulldozers
These vegetables are suicidal
It seems concussion suits you
I must not be afraid of failure
What do I need to give up?
Crystalline ladders, shiny things, mirror-balls
That the underworld is my oyster

I was really hoping to find more here, but then again, this is Coil...what can we expect?
No idea about St. Peter's disease. In regards to the keys, St. Peter is traditionally known as the keeper of the keys to heaven. Peter = Petra, that is, the "rock" upon which Christianity is built. One could make an argument that religion is the disease.
Serenity is the problem. Hmm... well, Johnn Balance was well known as an alcoholic, and the so-called "recovering" alkies in AA put alot of faith in serenity. From my own experience, the AA brand of spirituality is very Christian-oriented and not compatible with genuine occult practices and philosophy (which is a big part of what Coil is all about.) So maybe there is another connection.
Someone help me out with this one. It's a great song, with an eerie synth line, but I really don't know what the lyrics are supposed to mean.
I don't understand the allusions. St. Peter's disease? Not really up on my bible.
Suicidal vegetables? Mirror balls? Crystalline ladders? Shiny things?
COIL are an experience. This song is a portal into the dark territories of the mind. Other than that I can't give any objective meaning but I am biased by perspective anyway. Live Three contains an expanded version of this song.
Re: St Peter, he's usually the first dude Christians believe they'll see when they die, so my guess is St. Peter's disease is death.
He's in traditional songs a lot. "St Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go, I owe my soul to the company store." etc.
