i think it means .. who ever wrote the song is worried about who they will be when they are older. there parents or other elders give them advice that might bring down his true dreams bc every one else only thinks they will turn out as there parents did.
It's about a crappy relationship between father & son. "Puppet strings make enemies of a father and his son." It's about JB's (lead singer) relationship with his dad.
