The Bottom Lyrics

How High
Soldiers pull boys through rain
Ground to their toes
Ground to the dirt

Oh my
They spilled down the steps
Filed in rows like hair likes to pour
Like skin loves to warm
But teeth don't pull like these chains don't drag around
Because it's safe at the bottom

Wind down to the beds of the leaves
Bedding of sand where fire don't burn
(but the tops of trees)
Out, Out of the head streams a maze
Of colors and shapes that dance from these walls
But just don't pay like these guns don't fuck around
Because it's safe at the bottom

I know what I know
And all I ever need is you
I know what I know
And all I ever need is you
And all I ever need is you

Down
Down in the sand lives alone
In shackles and bone meat blood from grown
Gravel and Stone
But teeth don't pull like these chains don't drag around
Because it's safe at the bottom

Calm but never finds rest these bones
For what we don't know
For all that we know
It's all that we've known
But just don't pay like these guns don't fuck around
Because it's safe at the bottom

I know what I know
And all I ever need is you
I know what I know
And all I ever need is you
And all I ever need is you

But teeth don't pull like these chains don't drag around
Because it's safe at the bottom

I know what I know
And all I ever need is you
I know what I know
And all I ever need is you
And all I ever need is you

I love this song, how it sounds all psychadellic. The lyrics make it look like it's about war.

Yeah I agree that it's about war. The only thing I'm having trouble decifering is the "And all I ever need is you" line, who is he talking about in this line? perhaps a Loved one?

That's my thought. He's going through the trenches, fighting in the war, thinking of his loved one, constantly.

I can't begin to decipher this song, so I'll break it down piece by piece and see if someone can add to my ramblings to make sense of this song.

"How High Soldiers pull boys through rain Ground to their toes Ground to the dirt"

Obvious visual imagery. You can picture the kid being dragged by a soldier and the boy's tattered shoes.

"Oh my They spilled down the steps Filed in rows like hair likes to pour Like skin loves to warm But teeth don't pull like these chains don't drag around Because it's safe at the bottom" "They" is possibly the soldiers? But I don't like the obvious content of war, I think it may be metaphorical which would also make the chorus easier to fit in.

"But teeth don't pull like these chains don't drag around" That line in particular I can't seem to make sense of, the chains of the prisoners, "teeth don't pull"... hmm...

"I know what I know And all I ever need is you" Should this song be about war, possibly the trust of the captive placed in a god?

This line is actually wrong "But just don't pay like these guns don't fuck around" it should be "trust", like the guns are no joke, and are killing people, the trust in friends? Family? Government? God? becomes worthless to the singer.

its actually trust dont pay like these guns dont fuck around

I feel like its too literal to just be about war. I was thinking possibly about a lover, who is too overbearing and controlling.

"They spilled down the steps Filed in rows like hair likes to pour Like skin loves to warm" "But teeth don't pull like these chains don't drag around" as in the teeth-pulling agony of war doesn't compare to the agony of being dragged around in chains by someone you love "I know what I know And all I ever need is you" and the worst part is he still loves them no matter how much they torment him

but it could also possibly be about them living in Alaska, and being safe from war and the like "because it's safe at the bottom" could be referring to their home in Alaska as the "bottom" of the earth? or, I know they lived in Wasilla. So possibly they lived just south, or at the "bottom" of, Lake Wasilla? I feel like this meaning applies more to "Dawn", which also has the line "it's safe at the bottom", but maybe it carries over to this song too

just my thoughts on it
