Yeah I agree that it's about war. The only thing I'm having trouble decifering is the "And all I ever need is you" line, who is he talking about in this line? perhaps a Loved one?
That's my thought. He's going through the trenches, fighting in the war, thinking of his loved one, constantly.

I can't begin to decipher this song, so I'll break it down piece by piece and see if someone can add to my ramblings to make sense of this song.

Obvious visual imagery. You can picture the kid being dragged by a soldier and the boy's tattered shoes.

But I don't like the obvious content of war, I think it may be metaphorical which would also make the chorus easier to fit in.

This line is actually wrong "But just don't pay like these guns don't fuck around" it should be "trust", like the guns are no joke, and are killing people, the trust in friends? Family? Government? God? becomes worthless to the singer.

I feel like its too literal to just be about war. I was thinking possibly about a lover, who is too overbearing and controlling.

but it could also possibly be about them living in Alaska, and being safe from war and the like "because it's safe at the bottom" could be referring to their home in Alaska as the "bottom" of the earth? or, I know they lived in Wasilla. So possibly they lived just south, or at the "bottom" of, Lake Wasilla? I feel like this meaning applies more to "Dawn", which also has the line "it's safe at the bottom", but maybe it carries over to this song too
