i heard this story on the radio the other day....
sarah bareilles was done with her album and an AR (album rep) said she needs one more song to send the whole CD home, a "love song"...so sarah went to write these lyrics saying she doesnt want to write a love song for the CD just to make or break the album for sales

Again, yes this might be about her telling her record company that she's not writting a love song for them just because they asked for it. It's about her being an artist and not compromising herself by writting a song about something she's not really feeling at that moment. It can also be about a relationship. It could be about a guy who wants her to say "I love you" when she's not ready for it yet. She's basically telling this guy that she's not going to say something she doesn't feel just to keep him around. That could be another meaning to it. Thats what makes this song so great! It can have so many different meanings! My favorite part is the beginning though, "Head under water And you tell me To breathe easy for a while"

Love it! One of my favorite songs of all time! I agree with dustinator, I think it might be her way to say that she's not ready to say "I love you" to this guy she's with. I think you can tell when she sings: "It's too soon to see if i'm happy in your hands". Just a thought, there might be other meanings to it.
Beautiful song, one of my most favourite, great music and lyrics, this is the stuff. As for what its about? Well, just how she doesn't want to feel like she has to do all these things just to please her significant other, she should be loved for who she is, not what she does.
Complete garbage. She can't even reflect her emotions in this song. The song is about failed relationships and how men just lie to her but the music is happy and upbeat.

I can imagine why it would sound upbeat. I picture her telling her record company all that, with a smirk. Basically, you leave a smile on your face when you know you have gone your own way and made your own decisions without anyone telling you what to do.
