Close Call Lyrics
She was born on Brighton Pier
To a gypsy mother and a bucket of tears
Her good looks could have sailed a ship
But her will alone could have sunk it
Funny thing about money for sex
You might get rich but you die by it
It's going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Tell me now what would you do
Hanging back with the brutes
Hustling a pickpocket
That's no way to get rich
It's going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Businesswoman with good sense
If you live at all, you're going to die by it
Funny thing about money for sex
You might get rich, but then
It's going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
To a gypsy mother and a bucket of tears
Her good looks could have sailed a ship
But her will alone could have sunk it
You might get rich but you die by it
Going to be a close call
Hanging back with the brutes
Hustling a pickpocket
That's no way to get rich
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
If you live at all, you're going to die by it
Funny thing about money for sex
You might get rich, but then
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call
Going to be a close call

The part with "hanging withe brutes" is a hint at a quote from Tenessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire.
Trudat DCFCAlex. I wouldn't say this is their BEST album, but it's definitely not as bad as everyone's saying it is. oAnd the simplicity f the lyrics has a lot to do with the overall mood of the album. About the late night after hours scene and every thing. I think the album leaflet photography pretty much explains it.
I hope everyone gets that 'her good looks could'a sailed a ship...' is a reference to Helen of Troy ('the face that launched a thousand ships'). Funny what people are saying about the lyrics, stuff like this seems rather mature or sophisticated to me. I think the new album is their best since Take Offs And Landings personally.
Jenny said it was based off a story she wrote about a daughter of Gypsys who runs away to strike it rich as a prostitute.

i think this song is about someone, or someones, who kinda live a dangerous life, for money like pornstars, or prostitutes, or theifs. and how their whole life is kinda like a "close call" like everything they do practicially kills them, if not actually then like metephorically. like some people just have crap lifes to start with and never really do anything of substance, or do things that just dont make them feel good about themselfs, because they are always just getting by, with money, or even living situation. i'm probably reading way too much into this
I agree. and possibly always worrying about getting caught (theives and whores)

this song sucks. the whole album is a huge disappointment to be honest. the songs are so repetitive and the lyrics are very weak.
I know how you feel. I bought the execution of all things when it came out, and I have loved RK ever since. This album is definately more mainstream. I miss the old folky and quirky Rilo Kiley. It's like someone at Warner Bros. told them "Here's how you make a top 40 album . . . " and they did it. But it is good. And Jenny's insanely talented way of writing is shown through even on this album. With the exeption of Silver Lining, i was as well disappointed. But i guess you just have to appreciate it...

let uss be free if you don't like it don't comment on it. I am so fucking sick of people bitching about this album literally EVERYWHERE it is mentioned. get fucking over yourselves
I think the first line should be "born on BRIGHTON Pier"
then
"business woman with good sense"
I agree, i think it is/should be Brighton Pier.
I really don't think this album is that bad..
this song is eh. but jenny's voice sounds good. even though the lyrics are just ohkay.
