The Angels Hung Around Lyrics

I been had and I been held
With the ghosts at bay
I been oaked and I been doped
And carried away

I been charred and I been scarred
On my own face
But I never thought I'd see you
As I did today

Until the angels hung around
Until the angels hung around
Until the angels hung around
As they carried me away

I been clubbed and I been snubbed
By the dogs of L.A.
And I been burned and I been learned
In the same city

I been whored and I been gored
I been less and I been more
But I never thought I'd see you
As I did today

Until the angels hung around
Until the angels hung around
Until the angels hung around
As they carried me away

Oh!

You were stuck in the badlands
Acting like a bad, bad man
I been photographed and painted up
And I been in love only once

And I feared the best and loved the worst
And insisted that I go first
And watch your eyes as they poured
And I never really loved you more

And I never thought I'd see you
As I did today

Until the angels hung around
Until the angels hung around
Until the angels hung around
As they carried you away

And they put you in the ground
When the angels hung around
And the angels hung around
As they carried me away

I think this feels like a typical love lost song untill you hit the line "and they put you in the ground". It suddenly changes the context of the whole song and turns it on its head. Suddenly the whole song has a different meaning and it seems to me like the true meaning of some lyrics really lept out of the song at that point. On a second listening "I never thought Id see you like I did today" changes from something potentialy loving and positive to something very dark and depressive. It seems like a very deliberate and clever twist. I think this song is genius! It plays with your perceptions and feelings. It is very straight forward and that is what makes me think the twist in perception is what this song is all about. The pop sound and catchyness of the tune serves to hide the meanig of the song. I could imagine people singing along to this thinking of it as a nice song without realising it is about seeing a dead loved one.

Reminds me of 'Handle With Care'

she sounds, in her new album, as though she's more influenced by "Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins" than the original sound of "Rilo Kiley."

Sounds like this one is about the loss of a loved one, and the loss affected the person so much that she eventually died too, so the angels hung around awaiting the inevitable.

This is a great song. It's maybe my second favorite on an awesome album. Jenny sounds great, and the music rolls perfectly with her voice.

Agreed about her being influenced about the Watson twins. I liked her and the Watson twins though. But I think she should keep it separate from Rilo Kiley. Cause I like them both, but separate.

This song sounds familiar...

well, it's definitely got a country side to it. i wouldn't say it was "influenced" by the watson twins album. she was the singer! people don't influence themselves! :-p

you can tell even from the times of "it's a hit" that they were moving toward a country sound. it's just how they developed as artists. and if you listen to the elected, you can tell blake sennet's creative direction had a lot of impact on how they produced this album.

let me rephrase my earlier post, she's not necessarily influenced by jenny lewis and the watson twins, it seem like it's more of her incorporating the style of jenny lewis with the watson twins into rilo kiley, which i totally agree with shoreline that she should be able to separate the style of rilo from the style of the watson twins

it's definitely about a death of someone close. Specifically, everything of the worst and best can happen to you throughout life, but none of these experiences will stop you in your tracks as much as when a close one passes away.

It sounds like the person being mentioned was leading the bad choices in his life.. I wish she can interpret more about him than of herself.

Very much about rethinking life and going through grief. It's hard to imagine someone you care about gone, but the only thing we can do is believe they are in heaven.

'and the angels hung around, as they carried me away' Does anyone know what she meant by this, though? I've thought it either meant she'll eventually meet him in the afterlife or that the friend is the angel looking down on her.... but i know im waaaay off ?

this is definitely more solo jenny lewis than rilo kiley.

this just seems so safe. i mean its not bad. it feels to me like rilo kiley took less risks on this album than have in they have in the past.
