Runnin' Away Lyrics
Runnin' away
To get away
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
You're wearing out your shoes
Look at you foolin' you
Making blues of day and night
Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee!
You're stretching out your dues
Look at you fooling you
The shorter cut is quicker but
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Time is here to stay
Look at you fooling you
The deeper in debt
The harder you bet
Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee!
Need more room to play
Look at you fooling you
Another day
You're farther away
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
A longer trip back home
To get away
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
You're wearing out your shoes
Look at you foolin' you
Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee!
You're stretching out your dues
Look at you fooling you
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Time is here to stay
Look at you fooling you
The harder you bet
Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee!
Need more room to play
Look at you fooling you
You're farther away
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
A longer trip back home

Great comments Zazenpan, spot on. It's Sly, in a rare sober moment, writing a song to himself and getting his sister to sing it back to him. Knowing the way Sly's story subsequently turned out, the last few lines "Another day/you're farther away/ha ha ha ha/A longer trip back home" are unbelievably poignant. He knew what he was doing to himself but carried on down the "shorter cut".
I think it's about someone with depression, one that keeps avoiding troubles and keeps making the same mistakes and has lost grip with reality. That's why the woman says "look at you fooling you", but the one the song is about can't see, is about an unhealty person. That or maybe about something else. A great song i think.
Sorry, i forgot to say that when she says "a longer trip back home" i think the song is referring to a healthy state of mind. But every day the subject of the song is getting farther and farther away from that home, sanity.
