On the surface it's a simple break-up song...with Steve admitting he was so high at the time he broke up with his wife that he can't even remember how it all went down.
But, I also feel like the subject that he did not say "goodbye" to could have been the drugs in general. For a while drugs were the only thing that he could turn to..he was an addict, and after he was arrested he was forced to "break-up" with them. He was so high at the time of his lowest low that he can't even remember who he sobered up.

In the early nineties I was addicted to heroin. It destroyed my marriage, career and we lost our home. For me the "Mexico" in the song is the Mexican tar heroin I was strung out on. Sober since '95 and life is better but for me, this simple song brings the pain, loss and guilt back.

Sad….. I had been with a much older man and even though it was a mistake, I can see in his eyes The pain of losing his wife. The story is a much bigger one than that and they have been together apparently the whole entire lives. I really hope one day he will overcome his stubbornness and go to her. I really do feel he was pretty much in the wrong but in the end life is too short to be without your family and I can see that both he and her are in pain without each other. What he thought was love with me was an obsession with a much younger girl. I think he still may have a lot of growing up to do and the man is in his 50s but my entire family and I pray for him and his ex-wife every day that they will find each other I do not believe God put them together to spend their entire lives together for him to leave. ???????? They are in too much pain without each other that is for certain

It’s a small town where they live I’ve heard both stories from both sides now especially my parents have. She pretty much trusted him he pretty much lied to her she pretty much broke and went crazy and he did a pretty bad thing to her in the process. None of that matters what matters is family. My family and I are still praying for them.
