Right Moves Lyrics
All of a sudden now you're back again -
I thought you were happy with whoever?
or did you dream about me now and then?
Did you look up at the stars and feel something for the constellations?
All those lovers ( ? ) round their ( ? ), swings and arrows, dogs and lions separating touch from touch, the comedy of distance, the tragedy of separation.
Am I making all the right moves?
Am I singing you the right blues?
Is there a time when I can call you, just to see how you are doing?
I said how is it that you come back to me? You don't need the stories of my scars or in the stars to tell you nothings free. I traded all the innocence I ever had for hesitation. I said won't you tell me where you've been? You put a finger to my lips and then you kiss me once and once again. The crickets all lept up and met the moon with a standing ovation.
Am I making all the right moves?
Am I singing you the right blues?
Is there a time when I can call you, just to see how you are doing?
I heard the night was picking up this song, you threw your hair back and you sang along. And I realised...

i think the song is about love, in general- the premise seems to be that he was with the girl before, she left him for someone else then came back, now he wants to make sure he's doing the right things to keep her. my favorite is the last two verses though, it seems like they are trying to come to terms with the unpredictability of love. he is worried that someday things will change between them and they will lose the love they have ('drift apart in the night, never know why and not know how'), but she responds that at that moment they are together and happy ('i don't know darling, but i'm here with you and we're coming to the chorus now') so why worry about it? love might not last forever like we want it to, but if something is good and makes you happy, just appreciate it and accept the future when it comes. that's the message i get out of it.
"all those lovers circlin' round their luck"
that is what i hear.
I think the last verseis something like this:
I heard the night was picking up this song You threw your hair back and you sang along And I realized that I might lose you And you might lose me Drift apart in the night never know why And not know how
I said, "What if we are like the northern sky? What, there are things that come between us That we can’t take back, we can’t make right" You said, "I don’t know darling But I’m here with you and we’re coming to the chorus now"
LOVE this song! It's my favorite that I've heard from the new album.
I can't wait for the new album to come out... just days! To me it means you don't always know if you're doing the right thing or not, but you have too keep going and hope everything is going to work out the best it can.
tinydancer, I think you're right. :)

I think this song is about a couple who were once together, something happened between them and it ended.. but now one of them is back and wants a second chance..
Song about a guy who really likes this girl who obviously isn't to happy about him, so she keeps leaving but coming back possibly because she can't do any better? I think the guy tries but she obviously can't see how romantic he truly is. He's out with her, crickets are chirping, the moon is full... another night, the constellations are out for all to see! He is very romantic and making all the right moves but he can't get through to her.
The crickets chirping in the second verse suggests that the woman isn't answering the question - as in a TV show when an awkward silence is emphasized by dubbed-in crickets.
I love this song; it makes me happy. I think it is about overcoming self-doubt and worries and learning to see what is good about a relationship.

In my opinion, what has happened is this: After a separation, the girl decides to come back. There probably wasn't a real problem, except that the guy has some hesitation issues--he's too careful ("I traded all the innocence I ever had for hesitation"). He wants to be sure he's "making all the right moves." But he talks and thinks too much! In verse two he starts rambling over...

He wants to be sure he's "making all the right moves." But he talks and thinks too much! In verse two he starts rambling over all his worries about what when wrong before, but she basically says "shut up and kiss me". In that moment, since he can no longer speak about all his worries and hesitations, there is a beautiful silence. And that's why I think the "crickets met the moon with a standing ovation."
In the last verse, she is happy, enjoying his song and the good thing they have together. And as he begins to stumble into another string of 'what ifs', she reminds him: "I don't know darling, but you're here with me, and we're coming to the chorus now." ie 'Shut up and just enjoy what IS good!'
I love the imagery in this song. I feel like I can see the whole thing playing out. Ritter is fabulous with words and music, and I'm so delighted to have found out about him!
Does anyone know specifically what he's referring to when he says, "What if we are like the northern sky?" What is it about the northern sky that he would make this reference?
