All That Remains Lyrics

Just below the surface of an ordinary town
Burn the devils underground
Murder fills the skies above my eyes above the earth
Why didn't I realize?
See for the first time in my life defending

[Chorus]
All that remains
Drowning in flames
The same old story, but the names have all been changed
The fatal mistake you made
Was, of all the hearts you'd slain,
How you left alive my bloody valentine

Gravity unshackles you, and now you float away
Looking back upon your grave
You can't outrun your shadow,
you can only shut the lights
Pluck out your wicked eyes,
See for the first time in your life defending

[Chorus]
All that remains
Drowning in flames
The same old story, but the names have all been changed
The fatal mistake you made
Was, of all the hearts you'd slain,
How you left alive my bloody valentine

Aiming at the enemy, I only smash the mirror
Pluck out your wicked eyes,
See for the first time in your life defending

[Chorus]
All that remains
Drowning in flames
The same old story, but the names have all been changed
The fatal mistake you made
Was, of all the hearts you'd slain,
How you left alive my bloody valentine

I don't think this is about religion. It could be about how someone hurts several people in the same way and the singer is the one observing it, "The same old story/But the names have all been changed", and this latest victim was strong enough to rise above and try to defend their self against the evildoer, "The fatal mistake you made/Was of all the hearts you'd slain/How you kept alive my bloody valentine ". Or all the above said but the singer is talking to themselves, "Aiming at the enemy I only smash the mirror".

Actually, "Aiming at the enemy, I only smash the mirror" refers to himself being his own enemy.

have to quote this guy: " "The same old story/But the names have all been changed", and this latest victim was strong enough to rise above and try to defend their self against the evildoer, "The fatal mistake you made/Was of all the hearts you'd slain/How you kept alive my bloody valentine ". Okay, first of all, "the same old story, but the names have all been changed" could also refer to religion. Let's not forget about how similar most religions are.

and however tempting it might be to label this song to be about personal struggle, who says that maybe eppard at one point had a religion? In which case "aiming at the enemy I only smash the mirror" could mean that he's to some extent a hypocrite and probably hates himself for it. I know i would. Personally, being wary of the ways of 3, i find it too simplistic to label this song as ONLY a personal struggle. This song is about a personal and worldwide struggle with religion.

I think this one is about revenge and how it ends up destroying everyone. The character was extremely hurt emotionally by someone (or something; why not some false religion) and it drove him to all-consuming hate. He engages in revenge only to see everything drowning in flames - and on the second and the third verses he realizes that he has become just as bad as his enemy.

The same old story is of course, as the good old Friedrich put it, "he who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster" - and the fact that revenge has never really satisfied anyone.

Fits the theme of the album being about all kinds of endings.

I think it's about christians attacking everything in sight, and how everybody is now forced to defend everything these days, like science, civil rights, and atheism, all because some right-wing individuals don't like it.

It's a response how America is now a christian Taliban.

this song seems like it has little or nothing to do about christianity... maybe you're just lashing out at a religion you dont like? this seems to me that its more just a song about personal struggle...

Yeah, it sounds like it could very well be about a religion that is oppressive...which means that christianity is probably the most plausible...although let's not forget about Islam.

I don't really see how you got religion into this

Sorry kids, one more thing. "Aiming at the enemy I only smash the mirror", could mean he's holding a mirror to the bad guy so he sees what he's doing.
