Monkey Man (The Maytals cover) Lyrics

Aye-yi-yi, aye-yi-yi
Huggin up the big monkey man
Aye-yi-yi, aye-yi-yi
Huggin up the big monkey man

I never saw you, I only heard of you
Huggin up the big monkey man
I never saw you, I only heard of you
Huggin up the big monkey man

It's your lie, it's your lie
Huggin up the big monkey man
It's your lie, it's your lie
Huggin up the big monkey man

Now I know that, now I understand
Huggin up the big monkey man
Now I know that, now I understand
Huggin up the big monkey man

La-la-la, la-la-la
Huggin up the big monkey man
La-la-la, la-la-la
Huggin up the big monkey man

Aye-yi-yi, aye-yi-yi
Huggin up the big monkey man
Aye-yi-yi, aye-yi-yi
Huggin up the big monkey man

I never saw you, I only heard of you
Huggin up the big monkey man
I never saw you, I only heard of you
Huggin up the big monkey man

It's your lie, it's your lie
Huggin up the big monkey man
It's your lie, it's your lie
Huggin up the big monkey man

Now I know that, now I understand
Huggin up the big monkey man
Now I know that, now I understand
Huggin up the big monkey man

La-la-la, la-la-la
Huggin up the big monkey man
La-la-la, la-la-la
Huggin up the big monkey man

This is a cover of Monkey Man by The Specials, but lyrically, it's different.

I mean, it's a little different. Essentially, it's mostly the same and Amy cut out a verse.

I wish I could edit comments! The song was ORIGINALLY by Toots & the Maytals in 1970, and was then covered by The Specials. SO. Anyway, it's a cover. The end.

Ska from Jamaca. Great energy and authentic cover. Missing this verse:

From the English nursery rhyme:

Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross, To see a fine lady upon a white horse; Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, And she shall have music wherever she goes

Toots Hibbert of Toots and The Maytals wrote this about a friend of his. Check out the original, although Amy does a reasonable job and I always loved the way she tried to introduce Reggae and Ska to a wider audience.

This is poorest version of this song that I've heard. The Toots and The Maytals, Specials, and Reel Big Fish versions all own this one.

this cover is bullshit haha. the only reason it sounds relatively anything like Ska is because she has a good backing band that get no credit, and yes, to end the debate SHE HAS A SHIT VOICE. lol

First of all, this cover is better than the version by the specials, secondly Amy Winehouse has an amazing voice, you just don't know anything about good vocalists. As for the band not getting any credit, when has the band ever got credit when they're backing a self titled artist?

Take Jeff Buckley for example, he's an amazing vocalist, and everyone knows him, but no one could name a member of his band to save their lives, and why should they? He was the driving force behind the music, like Amy's the driving force behind her music.
