Lifeline Lyrics
Life is much too short, to sit and wonder
Who’s going to make the next move
And will slowly pull you under
When you’ve always got something to prove
I don’t want to wait a lifetime, yours or mine,
Yours or mine
Can’t you see me reaching for your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline.
You say that I misheard you
But I think you misspoke
I hear you laugh so loudly
While I patiently await the joke
Now, I could hold out for a lifetime,
Yours or mine,
Yours and mine
Can’t you see I’m reaching for a lifeline,
A lifeline,
A lifeline,
A lifeline,
Your life.
It’s a crime with only victims
We’re all laid out in a row
And it’s hardest to listen
To what we already should know
Please don’t make me wait a lifetime,
Yours or mine,
Yours or mine.
Can’t you see I’m reaching for your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
The lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your life,
Your life,
My life,
My life,
My lifeline.
Who’s going to make the next move
And will slowly pull you under
When you’ve always got something to prove
I don’t want to wait a lifetime, yours or mine,
Yours or mine
Can’t you see me reaching for your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline.
But I think you misspoke
I hear you laugh so loudly
While I patiently await the joke
Now, I could hold out for a lifetime,
Yours and mine
Can’t you see I’m reaching for a lifeline,
A lifeline,
A lifeline,
Your life.
We’re all laid out in a row
And it’s hardest to listen
To what we already should know
Please don’t make me wait a lifetime,
Yours or mine.
Can’t you see I’m reaching for your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,
The lifeline,
Your lifeline,
Your lifeline,

My life,
My lifeline.

I think its about being in a relationship that is getting serious and he doesn't really want it too. He wants out, he doesn't really want to spend his entire life being unhappy just to make the other person happy. That might be wrong though, it's just a guess and I didn't really do any research
Not sure if you based this on a live cut, but the album version has some differently arranged lyrics:

Two people are in love with one another but are clearly at odds and drifting apart. Each is waiting on the other to extend a hand. But the author feels like he's doing his best and reaching out but it doesn't appear the other is reaching back. And the fact neither are doing so is killing him. There has been a disagreement and she has said something hurtful which she is trying to take back. He has been hurt, and finds nothing humorous about the situation at all. He seems desperate in his attempt to have his partner reach out to him. He feels like it's a crime for a love like this to die, and each are hurting each other equally by their actions. But he feels they are meant to be together and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. They are one anothers lifeline...
