Landmines Lyrics

I'm crawling through landmines
Just to know where you are
There's smoke in my eyes
Cause you're burning the ground

I'm crawling through landmines
Just to feel where you are
Under cover of night I put a pearl in the ground

Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not too far
Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not so far

I found your ring with the feather on
One arm in and one arm gone
Save this ring let's bring Paris right here

Oh, my dear
My love
Do you know, my love? do you know?

I'm crawling through landmines
Just to feel where you've been
There's gauze over my eyes
But you're leaving this trail

I'm crawling through landmines
I know cause I planted them
Under cover of night I put my heart in the ground

Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not too far
Where'd you go?
Not so far
Please don't go
Not so far

I found your glove with the leather torn
Five fingers that I'm counting on
Smoke signals to call you right here

Oh, my love
My dear
my love
my dear

"I put a pearl in the ground" could mean "I threw away something precious". Another idea that's a little obscure - "ground pearls" are insects found in the Southwestern and Southeastern U.S. (Annie is from Texas). The larval stage is encased in a hard shell that looks like a pearl. They attach themselves the the roots of certain types of grass and eventually kill the plant. So the reference could be "I planted the thing that destroyed our relationship"

Beautiful song about regret

Does the phrase put a pearl in the ground have some sort of known meaning? I had never heard it until this album.

it shocks me that this song doesn't have more comments than it does! this song is so beautiful. the lyrics are just as gorgeous as the melody. it was a first favorite from annie.

not sure if "put a pearl in the ground" has any meaning but what it's always meant/represented for me in my personal interpretation was the idea of putting something pure and good into the soil and hoping it'll grow.

I assumed putting a pearl in the ground was getting pregnant

I'm 95% sure that when she says "oh, my love..." it is the sexiest, sensual yet absolutely heartbreaking lyric. Only Annie can capture those sentiments so powerfully with three words. Putting a pearl in the ground means doing something risky with the best of intentions. Love is putting a pearl in the ground. It's scary but sometimes it works.

this is without a doubt about a relationship that someone is desperate to stay in. "I'm crawling through landmines Just to know where you are" she'll do anything to stay in the relationship, even though the effort is hurting her. "There's smoke in my eyes cause you're burning the ground" and her lover is trying to cut off their ties, whether it's because it's for the better good, or because they enjoy being in control of her. "I put a pearl in the ground" metaphorically she will sacrifice the most precious of things just to be with them (regardless of the explosives haha?). In the end, she knows she "planted them" the bombs, essentially she knows she's hurting herself. Her heart in the ground is her final attempt to stay together or bring her lover back. As for the verses I dont really get em, I think the end she is finding more clues about her lover, perhaps he's disappeared. MAYBE THIS IS ALL ABOUT THE DEATH ABOUT HER LOVE. Lol I don't know but I just wanted to write this, it's long but I love the way it's written. One of my faves from her.

My Interpretation

To me, this song is so poetic, which not all lyrics are. I want to break this down piece by piece into what it means to me.

I am walking dangerous, unknown paths just to know you. It is hard for me to see clearly because you are lighting such a fire within me.

I am walking dangerous, unknown paths just to be able to feel you. now this line is important and everyone has speculated it on here. Under cover of night, I put a pearl in the ground. To me this means a few things. Under cover of night indicates that she has done this in secret. She is not openly expressing it. Now firstly, isolated, to put a pearl in the ground, I see as taking something good and pure and 'planting' it (as someone else said) to me, that is like setting something in stone. But I also want to think of this in the context of the song. She is talking about walking through landmines, but she stops, when no one is around, to put a pearl in the ground. So in the midst of volatile, dangerous grounds, she is instead, placing beneath her, something beautiful and rare. I think what this piece means is that she, secretly, deep down, feels safe with this person. She is putting her whole trust in them.

next is basic Where'd you go? Not so far Please don't go Not too far Where'd you go? Not so far Please don't go Not so far

I found your ring with the feather on One arm in and one arm gone Save this ring let's bring Paris right here I'm not entirely sure about this part. So I'm just going to go with what the imagery leans me towards. It sort of sounds like one of the landmines exploded. But seeing how she found it, it makes me think maybe it exploded previously, with someone else. She found a piece of them that has a feather with a ring on, which sort of makes me think of a wavering, unsure feeling about marriage. one arm in one arm gone because they like the idea and they want it but they have already lost one arm to it. maybe they previously found someone they wanted to marry, but that exploded and left them scarred. She is saying save the ring, let's bring Paris right here. Rather than having some extravagant marriage, you hang onto that ring for now, and rather than some wild honeymoon in Paris, let's bring all that romance and excitement into what we already have. The ring is important to me as this album is called Marry Me.

Oh, my dear My love Do you know, my love? do you know?

I'm crawling through landmines Just to feel where you've been (same again) She is changed by this relationship, she's trying to protect herself, but she is forever affected by this person.

I'm crawling through landmines I know cause I planted them - this part is interesting. I think it means that the landmines only exist because she has let herself be vulnerable which she sort of says next Under cover of night I put my heart in the ground - in secret, she surrendered her heart to this path.

Where'd you go? Not so far Please don't go Not too far Where'd you go? Not so far Please don't go Not so far

I found your glove with the leather torn Five fingers that I'm counting on Smoke signals to call you right here - Again could refer to a past relationship or even something the two of them have been through. smoke signals to call you right here. I can't tell if this is intimate and romantic or if she's saying that she is so desperate to get this person closer to her that she is setting off 'fake landmines' or smoke signals which could mean idk, false issues. Crying out. not sure? Could just be a sweet sentiment too.

Oh, my love My dear my love my dear

This song is so gorgeous and I think a very vulnerable, revealing moment in a relationship.
