Finer Feelings Lyrics
its a bit of a story - the narrator starts out a frantic, hopeless romantic desperately seeking love, but by the end he sees that its foolish to try so hard to find love and that he'll just have to wait and he'll find the right person when he least expects it:
-he was constantly looking for the right girl in memphis (which is described negatively: since it "creeps" and "tastes like an attack," -people told him to stop "scouting the field" but he starts his frantic newspaper search and stresses himself out working at a bunch of part-time places probably to meet new people and just tries to "hold out for some fate"....he even gets a "sharp" new hair cut in hopes of finding the perfect girl -then one day while he was "dreaming in the drivers seat," he realized he shouldnt look so hard for love since it was like a "witch hunt" and was just all "fuss[y]"... so by the end he has a revelation and he realizes that its foolish to look for love and that itll just have to come to you...
probably overanalyzing but i like to think the repetition of the twangy tune in the beginning in the background kinda reflects how it was a forced, impatient mechanism --trying to find love- but in then in the end it is just a happy skippy repetition... its like finding love is a bitch, but when its not forced and cluttered with trying to plan it and track it down, the random and unpredictable nature of it is what makes it enjoyable and exciting....
really really great in concert
This song has most of my favorite lines from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I like:
I was part-time at the Tasty Prawn That and moving furniture and cutting lawns
I also really like the bit about dreaming in the driver's seat and:
Always out on some witch's hunt For the one who never lets me want
I also like the guitar bridge and the handclaps and pace of this song. It sounds like a driving through the desert song.
I enjoy this song, one of my favorites from the record
To me it's Obvious that this is about getting a Major Label record deal. They thought Memphis Record Co's were attacking them. Knowing they are out in the audience scouting then was horrible, and the execs telling the band to stop looking for a better deal and go with them. He had crappy part time Jobs, but held out for the best match.
Chorus: Sometimes he thinks he'll find a record company that will make him change his mind and not long for someone better.
Then, one day while driving, he realized, He's always looking out for the bad label, who will hold him back, but all that worrying isn't worth it; it's all fuss.
In general - It's about their struggle with "Selling Out"
I think you're right, but I think the chorus is about his yearning for the widespread adoration that will make him feel complete,
Sometimes I think that I'll find a love One that's gonna change my heart I'll find it in Commercial Appeal And then this heartache'll get chased away
if you think of Commercial Appeal as actual commercial appeal instead of a music magazine. So to me it's about more than finding the right label, it's about him wanting to be recognized for his greatness on his own terms.
I always thought this song was about the music business, but then it struck a chord with me after a party with an ex. We were on good terms, and possibly headed back to being together, but the situation was such that he could flirt with others guilt free, and I couldn't. To me, it describes a situation that everyone is in favor of, but you knew it wasn't right despite popular opinion, and when push comes to shove in the aftermath, it STILL wasn't right.
The song could go both ways, being about the music business or about finding love.
But, this is a key fact:
The Commercial Appeal is the daily newspaper for Memphis. It is not a music magazine.
(I'm from the area, I read the Commercial Appeal.)
That reference is making an allusion to the fact that people are telling him to look in the classifieds for a girl.
Wow! That changes things! It does make complete sence that he is looking for a girl, but I never would have known, but maybe I should have with Commercial Appeal capped each time.
Thanks Gold.
He wrote this song on the road, when his finer feelings came up: he's always looking for something/someone to love, but nothing really fills him or takes away his heartache.
i like this song quite a lot, but what do they say around 3:10, right after the last "And then this heartache'll get chased away"?
"Et on remet ça, à fond la caisse, Maximum !! Oh là là, ça fait du bien..." It's spoken in french.
