Ice Monster

Great band, amazing song. I especially love the acoustic version from their Daytrotter session!

I don't mean to nitpick, but the way I hear this song (and the way I prefer to think of it I suppose), suggests that it isn't a song to himself about a girl he lost, but rather a song to the clingy, troublesome ex-boyfriend of a girl he's now dating.

I think the usage of pronouns and the general syntax of the song fit much better under this interpretation.

Anyway, I'll say again that I love this song. I have since the first time I heard it, but recently, I've grown to appreciate it even more. I just went through a rough break up after a long relationship, and listening to this song while imagining my ex's future boyfriend singing it to me was actually immensely helpful. It allowed me maintain an acute awareness of myself and my actions towards her in a difficult situation, and ultimately avoid becoming the kind of douchebag about whom this song was written.

I like ponyup's comment about this being related to burying luck, because I connected the first three songs in my head as well.

In Burying Luck, the narrator dreams of the Man in the Hole, who steals his girl and ruins his life. He the wakes up only to find out it actually happened.

In Ice Monster, I imagined the Man in the Hole speaking to the narrator of Burying Luck. He tells him that she's gone cross the border, to someplace safe where she can be away from him.

With the transition into Knights, I saw the first narrator following her into this beautiful, safe world. The lyrics of the song is him trying to make amends, " I owe you, don't I?" and trying to solve the problems that he most likely caused so that he can at least sleep well at night.

Anyway, that probably isn't what Minus the Bear had in mind, but my imagination got carried away when it heard this album.

I was also just gonna come by and comment to say that I went back and forth on whether he was saying "like a good fuck, oh what you do to me" but it definitely sounds like an i sound instead of an o.

Who is he talking to though?

I think it's an extension of Burying Luck, in that he's talking about losing his girl.

"You're safe if I'm safe And if she's safe we're ok The sooner we're past this we'll all stop our knocking on wood..."

I think this means that as long as his girl is alright, with whomever she's with, then he's ok with it and he can stop hoping she will come back to him.

I think it's a man proclaiming his independence from this woman after she's already left. It's his way of saying "fuck you, too" after she's already gone. That he doesn't care anymore, that she can't come back, that...it's done. It's kind of weak, if you think about it.

"Well...fine! Fuck you, too!"

I think its about 2 lovers that have broken up and he is trying to get over her which can be explained by saying "shes gone......you'll never see her again" over and over.

also they might have broken up due to a fight or realizing that their relationship won't work by repeating "its come to this"

but of course, thats my opinion
