fantastic song. always loved it. off the top of me head, i'd say it's about them tramps yasee on the street but yu dont trust them because infact they probably have a house and loads of material [plastic] tramp.
plastic could also refer to how they're fake...
This song is about homeless people who actually have homes. Plastic meaning fake.
And he's annoyed at how people actually beieve it: "and i am baffled by how you stand there, soaking it in"
Saying that SOME people on the streets are just fake, and make it all up, etc etc

love this tune but does anyone else think that "your imagination" sound a lot like the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when Willy Wonka sings "pure imagination" just in a lower octave?? i dunno it just reminded me a lot of it xx
I may be wrong, but, here is what i think the song 'may' be about/mean:
- Someone who is fake - ''plastic''.
- Someone who sits in there house/room all day - ''He looks as if he hasnt slept, his hair is purposely unkept; The shadows underneath the eyes''.
- But lies and says he's 'been out' - ''Is he really on the street; everywhere the bastard lies''.
- But because he has no friends, cause he is always 'indoors', the person cant tell if he is liying - ''My lack of Proof is your disguise''.
- ''I could be wrong unless you play your game'' - He is liyin/ playing a game, so he deceivs him. ;s
- ''what he's wearing on his feet won't solve our mystery'' like, looking at what he is wering on his feet aint gonna help to prove he is a liying bastard ;s ... i aint quiet worked out that final bit ;s .. but hopefully you get my drift. :S

The people who say this is about a fake tramp are totally right. I think “This world is cruel and most unkind, and horrible is redefined” refers to the fact that, as if the world weren’t cruel enough, horrible is redefined when this guy who actually does have a home stands around asking for money when there really are people who are much worse off than him.
“the only thing you’re sobbing out is your imagination” His sob story is all a fake, the typical story of ‘I need the money to feed my kids’ is all made up.
“Is he really on the street, desperation or deceit and what he's wearing on his feet won't solve our mystery” Is he really desperate or just tricking people? His shoes are crap enough to look like they could belong to a beggar but not necessarily.
“and i am baffled by how you stand there, soaking it in and do you hide your identity where you hide your grin, better hide your grin” He stands there soaking in everyone’s sympathy, people feeling sorry for him and giving him money. But on the inside, his true self is laughing away at those suckers that really fall for the act, his identity is well hidden along with his grin, behind a façade of grief and misery.
