Fairytale Lyrics
Cinderella's on her bedroom floor
she's got a
crush on the guy at the liquor store
cause Mr. Charming don't come home anymore
and she forgets why she came here
Sleeping Beauty's in a foul mood
for shame she says
none for you dear prince, i'm tired today
i'd rather sleep my whole life away than have you keep me from dreaming
cause i don't care for you fairytales
you're so worried bout the maiden though you know
she's only waiting on the next best thing
Snow White is doing dishes again cause
what else can you do
with seven itty-bitty men?
sends them to bed and calls up a friend
says will you meet me at midnight?
the tall blonde lets out a cry of despair says
would have cut it myself if i knew men could climb hair
i'll have to find another tower somewhere and keep away from the windows
cause i don't care for you fairytales
you're so worried bout the maiden though you know
she's only waiting on the next best thing
once upon a time in a faraway kingdom
man made up a story said that i should believe him
go and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight
but i don't want the next best thing
so i sing and hold my head down and i break these walls round me
can't take no more of your fairytale love
cause i don't care for you fairytales
you're so worried bout the maiden though you know
she's only waiting on the next best thing
i don't care
i don't care
worry bout the maiden though you know
she's only waiting spent the whole life being graded on the sanctity of patience and a dumb appreciation
but the story needs some mending and a better happy ending
cause i don't want the next best thing
no no i don't want the next best thing

its about how she's grown up with these stories of women that spend thier whole life searching for the right guy and once they find him they live happily ever after, but life doesn't happen that way and this is her theory on what happened after the fairy tale ended.
"cause i don't care for you fairytales you're so worried bout the maiden though you know she's only waiting on the next best thing" means that everybody watches the woman in the story, but she thinks that she's just settling for prince charming and that she really doesn't want to be with him, but instead is looking for the "next best thing".
"once upon a time in a faraway kingdom man made up a story said that i should believe him go and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight but i don't want the next best thing so i sing and hold my head down and i break these walls round me can't take no more of your fairytale love" means that men make up these stories and tell people to accept that this is how society should be, but sara says that you should go tell you man that "you love him" and "he completes you" and other clique things like that but she doesn't want that sort of thing, so she breaks those walls down (meataphor for those expectations) and goes to find what she wants.
"worry bout the maiden though you know she's only waiting spent the whole life being graded on the sanctity of patience and a dumb appreciation but the story needs some mending and a better happy ending cause i don't want the next best thing" means that those sort of women are being constantly watched and judged by how patient they are and that's how they get apprectiated, but sara thinks that the story needs some work done and a different ending, because she doesn't want that sort of thing.
:D
I totally agree with it!

It's about independence. She's saying as girls we're taught these stories of these princess' sitting around waiting for a man to come save them. But she wants to save herself, because she can.
"once upon a time in a faraway kingdom man made up a story said that i should believe him go and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight but i don't want the next best thing so i sing and hold my head down and i break these walls round me can't take no more of your fairytale love"
I've heard her say that she loved fairytales when she was younger, but she always wanted to know what happened after the "happily ever after." To quote her, "Does Cinderella go back to cleaning toilets after the honeymoon, or what?" She also said that she's trying to say that women can save themselves and don't need a prince to save them from anytihing.
this song is pretty much making fun of fairytales. she's explaining that women don't have to wait for a man to sweep them off their feet or save them because we've become a lot more independent since these tales were created. so she says she would rather make her own fairytale than follow someone else's. that's why she constantly says 'your fairytales'. the song is addressed to men who still believe that women should act like these fair maides for them to rescue.
WOw well umm...fersher pretty much summed that all up...and i agree.

thanx :D i try
To me this song is basically saying how growing up we all get told these fairytales and they are always with this happily ever after, but if you think about what were the choices for the girls in these stories...be dead, be servant, be trapped in a tower, or be with this prince. It's about not waiting or being passive, be active go find your happiness and don't settle just because it's better than what currently is.
There's an aspect of musical meaning as well. As she mocks these fantasies that girls have come to accept as the facts of reality, she plays out a jazz/doo-wop part that might represents her clinging to the past anyway, and her refusal to release what she has been forced to accept is no longer the truth.
When I saw her live she said she wrote it for her love of feminism. It's definitely a very feminist song - bashing the stories girls grow up listening to, only giving them unrealistic ideals so they're very let down when they find out love and men are not so simple! I really love the way she's twisted the stories round; how good are the lyrics? The line "the tall blonde lets out a cry of despair says would have cut it myself if i knew men could climb hair" is especially clever and funny!
