City Lyrics

There's a harvest each Saturday night
At the bars filled with perfume and hitching a ride
A place you can stand for one night and get gone
It's clear this conversation ain't doing a thing
'Cause these boys only listen to me when I sing
And I don't feel like singing tonight
All the same songs

Here in these deep city lights
A girl could get lost tonight
I'm finding every reason to be gone
Nothing here to hold on to
Could I hold you?

The situation's always the same
You got your wolves in their clothes whispering Hollywood's name
Stealing gold from the silver they see
But it's not me

Here in these deep city lights
A girl could get lost tonight
I'm finding every reason to be gone
Nothing here to hold on to
Could I hold you?

Calling out, "Somebody save me I feel like I'm fading away"
Am I gone?
Calling out, "Somebody save me I feel like I'm fading"

Deep city lights
Girl could get lost tonight
I'm finding every reason to be gone
There's nothing here to hold on to
Could I hold on to you?

If you're single in LA, man or woman, and have a soul; this is how you feel.

Incidentally I love the first line, "there's a harvest each Saturday night at the bars filled with perfume and hitching a ride" ....brilliant.

This song is so chilling to me now, and the reason it is that way has nothing to do with the songs meaning. My grandfather asked me if it was snowing outside the night he was in the hospital for cancer. It was the last thing he said to me, and I told his 'No, not yet." He nodded a little. The next day, I was waiting to be picked up from school and my mom called and told me he died, as soon as she said that, I saw tiny snowflakes outside of the window. The day of his funeral, I was listening to this song on my mp3 player, and I walked outside, as soon as I looked up there was nothing but snow. I just stood there in the snow listening to "Calling out, somebody save me, I feel like I'm fading away" and that just amazed me. Every time I listen to this song or it snows, I think of him.

Memory

sara b wrote this song about her time at UCLA, when she was just another girl from a small town living in a big city. she felt lost, lonely, and didn't know how to find people who made her feel like herself. it's about her search for that.

the personal connection of knowing exactly what she went through, coming to a huge school on your own, where you knew no one, gives this song so much more meaning to me. and finding it is something we all want, and that i'm incredibly glad i was able to find.

Song Meaning

Totally vampires. But I think you guys are taking too big a picture here. The basis of this song is just about the bar scene. The first verse is self-explanatory, the way people interact in that kind of environment. Wolves whispering Hollywood's name seems to be about how we (guys) like to talk game and and exaggerate. I'm sure in Cali, Hollywood is a hell of a name-drop. The end of the chorus, however, suggests that there's someone ("you") who is almost an escape from the confusion and frustration.

haha... vampires?!... anyway... i love the line, "a place you can stand for one night and get gone."

The meaning of this song is actually quite simple: it's about being lost in a strange place (in this case the city of L.A.) and coming across very unlikeable people who will try to end you or become obstacles in your life who have the guise of friends ("wolves whispering Hollywood's name"). The piano version is beautiful, but the album version (from "Little Voice") is incredibly beautiful with its mellow instrumentation and a kickass guitar solo.

does anyone else think that "bars filled with perfume and hitching a ride" is actually "bars filled with perfume an itch in your eye"?? thats what i think it sounds like is all and it makes sense to me! its a great song though! i love the "Calling out, "Somebody save me I feel like I'm fading" " bit

This song is so hauntingly beautiful...

To me, this song is personally really talking about Sarah Bareilles and how her fame has changed her lifestyle: being in the lights, parties, bars, and even the people, just everything is so big and flashy, but it just doesn't suit her. She can't enjoy or relate to that new life she has, and she just wants to go back to her old home. Where she just wants that someone to be in her arms.

You may interpret this song totally different than i did, but there's never a wrong answer. That's why i love Sara Bareilles and just the nature of music in general. You can always connect to the lyrics no matter what. (:
