Three Stooges.
Jerome is Curly, Sam is Shemp, Louis is Larry. Mr White could be Jules or Jack White who directed a lot of Stooges shorts.
What I love about this song is the dichotomy between his description of The Three Stooges which is fast, loud and charged and the melodic and calming “thoughts” section talking about his theory and Mr. White... until the end where he screams his plea, in their defense, in typically beautiful Frank Black style...

Vaudeville was a type of theater popular in those days. There was violence but it was lighthearted unlike the crap that is out nowadays.

After the death of Shemp (who himself was a replacement for the ailing Curly), Moe Howard hired Joe Besser as a replacement. After Besser left the team, Joe DeRita was hired.
